If You'll Let Me Finish?

My most dearly held ambition was once to be a published author, not in the sense that this blog is published but a proper, paid-for, bought-in-shops type author.

I'd still like to achieve that ambition one day ... but as the years have passed it's become more of a dream than something I'm striving for. I still write compulsively but ...

To make a reality of that dream would take talent. Do I have the necessary talent? Me being me, my gut reaction is that I don't but I'm old enough to realise that I can't be objective. I know that, ultimately, it's not down to me to make that decision.

There's something else that's required as well, though, and that I definitely struggle with. An author needs not only to be able to write well but also need to be able to push on with a piece and finish it. I'm only too aware that

I don't think I've ever dreamed of being a published author because writing is such a painful love-hate process for me. I'm too perfectionist - forever striving for just the right word. I write, draft, rewrite and tinker until I'm dizzy

Really, I love to write the exciting bits - it's the boring in-between bits that bog me down I'm not disciplined enough to write a 'proper' novel, I fear

I dream of one of those luxurious 'Garden Offices' where I can retreat to peace and quiet, my computer and unlimited imagination ....

I don't think I can be an author I suck at writing and I don't like to undergo time pressure to meet deadlines.

Marina ... That lack of discipline is precisely my problem. I love the phase of plotting it out, making sure all the loose ends are neatly tied up. There are inevitably some parts (usually large parts) that I enjoy writing ... but then I tend to lose interest once I know exactly what I need to write. It's as if the challenge has then disappeared though by definition that's the most challenging phase of all for me! As for the garden office, I once when to a huge garden show where they had the most phenomenal, huge tree houses ... I want one of those to write my magnum opus in!

Helga ... You have a deal! I'd better get on with writing mine, hadn't I?

..And I'll buy both yours and Helga's ...if you let me take the photos to be included in each.

** Being retired, I have more than enough time to start and finish a novel or anything else I may choose to create...except for a Sports' calendar...or so it seems. Or is that because I'm constantly being distracted? Or is that side-tracked? I'm not sure...wait...need to start another load of laundry...or was that go get groceries...no...it was walk the dog...that's not right, I don't have a dog...OH WHATEVER! See what you have to look forward to when your my age, TQG? **

You shall be!

P.S. That tree house idea sounds wonderful...very Swiss Family Robinson meets (your fave author here) and begets (your name here).

TQ and Helga-it is no good if you both write the SAME novel? perhaps you could do half each?

Weird! What I wrote was all true ... but the sole intention was to raise a smile with the ending. I didn't expect anything like this kind of feedback, good people ... guess I may not have that much talent as a writer after all

Nip ... As and when I finish my next piece, I shall have it checked out widely!

Sassybelle ... I'm assured we all have our different talents!

Cannon ... So I should wait to create my magnum opus until I'm retired too? Mind you, you probably wouldn't be so interested in taking the photos then! Just pull your finger out and get on with your calendar

BB ... Thanks! I tell you, these tree houses were good enough to live in!

Slightly_Sexy ... Oh I can write a paragraph a day ... just not necessarily always from the same story!

Polly ... Indeed, you're right. I'm doomed
