My new(ish) home, the Pink Palace, is part of the hospital complex where I work. I can make my way from my room to my department in under 2 minutes. I usually get up for work in ample time so unless I don’t set my alarm properly or sleep through it I can’t possibly be late for work, right?

Some of you may be aware that I tend not to wear a lot of clothing at home. Well, there’s usually no one around to complain so I prefer to let it all hang out, as it were.

{Note to European Hot Tub chatters: yes, this means that you’ve been passing the time of day with a naked Quiet Guy … how much does that bother you? }

Today, I got up exceptionally early to get some work done on my PC. It just didn’t occur to me to get dressed first. While there are some activities, such as ironing, that demand a little more care, I’ve yet to feel threatened by typing in the nude. I’d just looked at my watch and decided I’d better get a move one: there was just time for me to iron a shirt, get dressed and get out to work.

Then the fire alarm went off.

I doubt that I’ve ever dressed so quickly. If someone had had a camera on my room (which would, I admit, raise an awful lot of questions), the film of me grabbing jeans, T-shirt and trainers and pulling them on frantically as I made my way to the door would have become a classic of physical comedy. Even so, I was one of the first out of the building. I’m glad I did pull on some clothes though rather than just diving into my bathrobe … it was cold out there and there was the sort of wind whistling around that makes brass monkeys long for thermal underwear. And we were forced to wait outside for almost 15 minutes.

Oh, the joys of communal living!

So, by the time we’d been let back in and I’d got ready for work I was already late. Perhaps this means that I should stay dressed at all times, given that I understand fire alarms are a regular feature of life in the complex? Hmmm … I don’t think so ‒ some prices are too high to pay!

Besides, I got off lightly compared with the girl who lives a few doors down from me: when the alarm went off, she was in the bath!
