Desert Island Dicks

Oh, I’m sorry … that should have read “Discs” rather than “Dicks”. I do hope I didn’t get any of you here under false pretences

I got a new toy recently (no, Wacky, not that kind of toy!). I may write more about it later as I’m pretty pleased with it but for now suffice it to say that it plays MP3s. So far I’ve put 25 albums onto it.

I seem to spend a lot of time travelling nowadays and it’s been good to have been able to carry music with me so easily. It’s also encouraged me listen to a lot of things I haven’t heard for a long time and I keep being overwhelmed by the sheer quality of some of the music I’ve accumulated over the years.

It made me think of a BBC Radio programme that many of you will know about: Desert Island Discs. The idea is that a celebrity chooses 8 tracks to take with him or her to a desert island, these being all that there’d be to listen to for … well, forever.

A complex enough decision to pick 8 favourite tracks that would weather the test of time. Me, though, I’ve been mainly listening to entire albums and it occurred to me that it’s much harder to pick a single album to take to a desert island.

Is there such a thing as a perfect album?

When I start to think about this, any number of excellent records come to mind - and the longer I think, the more candidates I come up with.

Let me open myself to ridicule by getting off the fence and admitting that my list of contenders includes Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells (the 30th anniversary remix from 2003 preferably) and Automatic for the People by REM .

Now while they all have their merits, would I really want to commit to any one of these, foresaking all others? Tubular Bells probably comes closest (I love the moment when the eponymous bells kick in - it always makes the hairs on my arms stand to attention) but it's not very good for a singalong.

Ah, but there is one other that I've been listening to for something like 30 years and familiarity has yet to rob it of its charm. Rather, familiarity just means I can sing along with the excellent lyrics. I’m referring to The Beatles’ Abbey Road, beautifully produced with a phenomenal range of moods and styles. From the uplifting Here Comes The Sun to the dark moodiness of I Want You, from the surreal humour of Maxwell’s Silver Hammer to the beauty of Something, it’s one excellent song after the other, from start to end. Even Ringo’s consolation prize, Octopus’s Garden, fits nicely in the overall work. And Ringo gets a drum solo too!

It may not be perfect. I may have a better album in my collection that I’ve somehow overlooked. But, for the moment, it’s my choice to take to my desert island (applications for the role of companion are now being sought!).

So, come on, tell me why I’m wrong. What would your choice be? And why?

We could be really clever here, and get a group of people to be marooned at the same time, and if we all bring a different album.. well we could be entertained for minutes. Thats before we start to cut and cook people for survial!

If you have the Beatles then I would bring Automatic for the People"!

Just need to find an Island now!

Actually, Cass, you need to find an island that comes with some way to play 'Automatic for the People'

I have a new toy too.

But Tubular Bells is an excellent choice! One of my all time favourites.

I couldn't decide which album I would take, I tend to play music to suit my mood, and you know how many mood swings we women have.

That, my dear Wacky, is a terrible cop-out. You have to find an album which covers all possible moods - that's why it's a challenge!

Come on, down off the fence with you (if only because it'll leave a terrible line across your bum).

Some good albums...DSOTM is a favourite of mine but I think Wish you were here was better, just DSOTM was a ground breaker.

Other considerations for me would be:

Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Led Zepellin - Led Zepellin
Hotel California - Eagles
Legend - Bob Marley
Bridge over troubled waters - Simon and Garfunkel
Songs in the key of life - Stevie Wonder
Santana - Santana
Close to you - Carpenters
A night at the Opera - Queen
Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman
Quadrophenia - The Who
BloodSugarSexMagic - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Nevermind - Nirvana
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
I do not want what I haven't got - Sinead O'Connor
Love it to death - Alice Cooper
Armed Forces - Elvis Costello
Touch - Euryhtmics

to name a few

Now that, Dev, is a long and (predominantly) good list ... but I don't think you quite understood the question! Which ONE (1) album (singular) would you take?

Go on - be rash and make a decision!

But Q it is such a wide and difficult choice. I think I would have to go with DSOTM, something of Enya's and probably one of the Blackmore's Knight that I do have. I think this would cover all of my moods. Unless, I sorta cheat and bring my CSNY box set. Would that count as one or 4???

TheQuietGuy2005 replies on 8/8/2006 2:46 pm:
I'm just amazed that anyone else knows Blackmore's Night! I thought I was the only one outside of Germany (I understand that they're remarkably popular over there for some reason).

Tell you what though: as you managed to plump, finally, for one thing I'll let you take the 4CD box set, okay?

Sorry Q....I understood the question.....and for me it's impossible to pin down....DSOTM....RUMOURS...WYWH....or....LEGEND.....that's my would vary depending on the day of the week and month of the year as to which I'd go for.......Summer would swing me towards Legend and Rumours....winter would have me torn between DSOTM and WYWH.
