I Rest My Case - Political Dissent In America

I recently did a series of postings on Political Dissent. See Political Dissent Part I, Political Dissent Part II and Political Dissent Part III .

True to form I got one comment that was critical of the current Bush administration. Even though my postings talked about political discourse in general, this person could not resist taking a "pot shot" at the Bush administration. Well, it's the popular thing to do these days, and so I guess I expected that type of comment. The comment referred me to a posting at that person's blog. The posting is [post 353960].

I think this posting just demonstrates what I was trying to convey in my postings regarding the sad state of political discourse here in America.

1. The posting is very bitter, negative and one-sided. It conveys the idea that President Bush has not done one single positive thing for this nation. Let me ask you, no matter your party affiliation, do you really think that is even close to being reasonable or intellectually honest?

2. The person who made the posting copied the contents from one of any of a number of websites which have this list of "40 reasons to 'hate' President Bush", a sitting President of the United States of America.

3. I wonder if the person who copied the information bothered to even read all of the reasons listed? It's a rather long list!

4. I wonder if the person who copied the information bothered to check out the accuracy of all this information? Forty reasons is a lot of information to check out, so I doubt that the person who posted this did his "due diligence". I suspect he and others may just accept it as the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

5. I wonder if this person has thought about whether it is appropriate to "hate" a political leader? Other language used in his posting, "fuck the bastard", conveys a disrespect and hatred for the current President of the United States. A picture of President Bush is posted next to a picture of a chimpanzee. Real classy political discourse!

6. The posting rattles on with 40 reasons to "hate" the President, so typical of political diatribes we see these days. Statements are made and are presented as facts with no back up information and without citing any sources for the information.

I rest my case!

Now, I don't have a lot of time to screw with this kind of balogna, but since it is so typical of things I've seen on this site and elsewhere, I think I will take the time and research each of the 40 points listed, and I'll come back in a future posting and report to you my findings along with some background information.

So, I hope you will look forward to seeing "the other side of this story" in a future posting.

I can tell you this ... I certainly don't "hate" the President of the United States. And while a number of things listed will be accepted as truths, I do suppose that other things listed in the list of 40 will be shown to be lies or half-truths. Further, I do suppose that I will be able to list a few worthwhile accomplishments of the Bush administration ... accomplishments for which President Bush and his administration should be accorded recognition and respect.

So, what do you think about all the constant Bush bashing?

I read it...nothing that I haven't heard before.

I would like to know when my share of the national debt dropped to $500...a news item like that would have been run as the lead off story on the nightly news.

Just my viewpoint...

I read it and am somewhat disheartened I mean come on people if for no other reason we should be behind our president because, when the terrorist hit the pentagon on Sept 11 it was not just a terrorist attack it was an act of WAR!!! Fyi anytime a group of people attack a military instillation whether here or abroad then it is a declared act of WAR!

Our president responded forcefully to this and I for one applaud him. Till one side or the other surrenders we will be at war. For the sake of America I sure hope it is not us that surrenders!

I think you are fabulous! I look forward to your findings. With that said....

I am sick of all the Bush bashing. The man is human. He is bound to make mistakes. I didn't see these same people 'hating' Clinton when he and his wife did all the lying and bull shit while they were in office. It goes for every one that ends up in office. I am so glad that Bush is not letting terror rule our lives. He is standing his ground and showing that we will fight back if someone gets in our face. That was needed for a long time. This touchy feely bull shit needs to stop!

My family has paid in blood, sweat and tears for this land. I feel that if you want to live here, then BE an American. Don't take from me and mine just so you can have more. IF you do not want to know the language or don't want to live by our rules, then go back to your country and live there since it is so much better!

OK, sorry, but I think I went off track. Point being, there are so many issues, all so important, that need attention, that only one man can do so much. And when he is getting walls put up at every turn just for political games, what can he do? Really?

I am disappointed by many things in the last four years of this administration but by no means do I hate a person. Ditto with the Clinton administration. An administration is much more than a person. As dysfunctional as our government is, I still think it is the best government to date and until that which is perfect comes and I will show support to whatever government the people vote in, and lobby to change what is inhumane or what I can not stomach.

Well I'm not going to say I'm a Bush friend or foe. I'm just going to comment on how there are always people unhappy with a president's term in office. They say things would have been better under _____ if he was in office. Who knows? We have to make due with what we have and try to work with what we got. I agree with Mofun...its not just one person. We need to clean up Capitol Hill some as well and get all the lobbyist out, maybe things will get better.

I suppose that I think he has done some good and some bad, but what gets me is he stands for a large backward leap. I won't read the 40 reason's to hate Bush because they are probably unimaginative and mostly bullshit and I won't read your blog about some good things he did. Absolutely nothing personal to you, my issue is what he stands for. He is on the record as against gay marriage, against a women's freedom of choice over what she can do with her body, and has done the minimal to advance stem cell research. He is quoted in the book American Theocracy as saying "god wanted him to be president." These things scare me!

Thanks to all who have commented here! We all have opinions regarding our political leaders. We all have a right and duty to get involved in understanding the main issues of our day. If we disagree with policy, we can dissent in America. That is one of our freedoms! We are also free to "hate" too! But come on! Those who would choose to "hate", what good will that accomplish? Can't we just disagree, but still hope and pray that our current leaders will have the wisdom and courage to work through the issues for the benefit of all Americans and for other people in the world? C'mon, Americans! Let's pull together! No matter who is sitting in that Oval Office, let's pray for him/her and support him/her!
