BLOG ON! *** Chapter 13

It was Tuesday evening around 6:35 pm and the lights were still on at Dick Steele's law office.

"Hi dear!" Dick spoke into the receiver of his phone. "I'm sorry, hon. I guess I was right about tonight. 'Looks like I need to stay here another couple hours and knock out some of this work that is pilin' up! I hope you understand?"

He knew his wife, Donna, would be sympathetic and understanding. That was just the way Donna was! She had always been a very loving and understanding wife. Throughout their entire 28 years of marriage, she had always been a great partner to him. They had married just after Dick had graduated law school and passed his Missouri bar exam. Donna had been a loyal wife and a loving mother.

"Oh sure, hon! Try not to work too late though! I'll save you a piece of cherry pie for when you get home!" Donna was so supportive and she was always baking sweets that Dick really shouldn't be eating anymore, but he loved her cookin'!

"Great! That's just swell, baby! I'm gonna have Betty order me a pizza, and then I'm gonna let her go on home to her family." Dick replied to his wife. "Well hon, gotta get back to work! See ya later!"

"Betty?" Dick called out to his personal secretary, Betty Henderson. "Looks like I'm gonna have to burn the midnight oil tonight. Would ya order me a deluxe medium pizza from Dominos?"

"Sure Mr. Steele. Would you like a soda with that? A Diet Coke?" Betty answered very promptly and professionally.

"You sure do know me well after our 18 years together, don't ya, Betty!" Dick smiled as he hollered back to his secretary. "Yep, a Diet Coke!"

"After that, hon, why don't ya knock off for tonight?! Go on home and spend some time with your family." Dick gave Betty advice that he rarely followed anymore himself.

"OK, Mr. Steele! The pizza will be here in 20 minutes." Betty had already taken care of his request! She was so efficient, and Dick knew he'd be absolutely lost without her!

"Thanks Betty! Now, you get outa this place! Go on home, dear!" He insisted.

"OK then! I'll see you in the mornin' Mr. Steele." Betty remained cheerful, bright and perky despite the fact that she had already worked nearly 10 hours today.

With that exchange, Dick turned up the volume on his office sound system. The digital satellite radio was set to an Oldies but Goodies station, and he reckoned he'd just relax listening to some of his favorite music as he poured over several case files that he needed to review. He'd be able to see the pizza delivery boy when he arrived since his corner office faced the street in front of his office as well as the parking lot.

As Dick began to open one of the case files on the large stack that Betty had brought to his office earlier, he remembered that he needed to check his NCAA bracket sheet to see where he stood in the annual office pool. The first and second rounds of the tournament had been completed this past weekend. He was sure that his picks had been decimated by a number of the major upsets, but he also reckoned that he might still have a chance in the office pool.

As the music began to flood over him, he kicked his feet up on his beautiful large mahogany desk and reached for his bracket sheet. He'd just check his sheet before diving into all his work. Besides he needed to keep an eye out for the pizza delivery boy. The music brought back fond albeit distant memories of his youth.

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low.
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right, that is I think it's not too bad.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Always, no sometimes, think it's me, but you know I know when it's a dream.
I think I know I mean a 'Yes' but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.

DUKE Blue Devils
"Check." That's one he had on his picks. "Duke was strong again this year and should make a run to the Final Four." he reasoned.

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings.
The six o'clock alarm would never ring.
But it rings and I rise,
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
My shavin' razor's cold and it stings.

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

You once thought of me
As a white knight on a steed.
Now you know how happy I can be.
Oh, and our good times start and end
Without dollar one to spend.
But how much, baby, do we really need.

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean.
Oh, what can it mean.
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen.

LSU Tigers
"Missed that one. Had Syracuse instead. Dang injury to the Orangemen's point guard was the difference."

There is someone walking behind you,
Turn around, look at me.
There is someone watching your footsteps,
Turn around, look at me

There is someone who really needs you,
Here's my heart in my hand.
Turn around, (turn around), look at me, (look at me,)
Understand,understand,

That there's someone who'll stand beside you.
Turn around, look at me.
And there's someone who'll love and guide you.
Turn around, look at me.

I've waited, but I'll wait forever for you to come to me.
Look at someone (look at someone)
Who really loves you, yeah, really loves you.
Turn around, look at me.

WEST VIRGINIA Mountaineers
"Check. The Mountaineer head coach may be on Missouri's head coach prospect list." he grimaced as he remembered the earlier, painful firing of Missouri's Quin Snyder, a young assistant from the Duke program who had not produced the desired results at Missouri after seven years.

You've given me a true love
and every day I thank you love
For a feeling that's so new
So inviting, so exciting

Whenever you're near
I hear a symphony
A tender melody
Pulling me closer
Closer to your arms

Then suddenly, I hear a symphony
Ooh, your lips are touching mine
A feeling so divine
'Till I leave the past behind
I'm lost in a world
Made for you and me

Whenever you're near
I hear a symphony
Play sweet and tenderly
Every time your lips meet mine now baby

Baby, baby
You bring much joy within
Don't let this feeling end
Let it go on and on and on
Now baby, baby
Those tears that fill my eyes
I cry not for myself
But for those who never felt the joy we felt

Whenever you're near
I hear a symphony
Each time you speak to me
I hear a tender so dy of love now

Baby, baby
As you stand holding me
Whispering how much you care
A thousand violins fill the air

Now baby, baby
Don't let this moment end
Keep standing close to me
Ooh, so close to me, baby, baby
Baby, baby
I hear a symphony
A tender melody

TEXAS Longhorns
"Check. The Big 12's best hope for a Final Four berth this year."

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper I love you
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me youll miss me
While Im alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
Im longing to linger til dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams til sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
Im longing to linger til dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams til sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

MEMPHIS Tigers
"Check. Got that one right too. John Calipari would make a great head coach at Missouri. He's on our list, but his contract buyout will be terribly expensive!"

***Knock, Knock, Knock.*** He had missed seeing the pizza delivery boy drive up. "That must be him at the front door right now." Dick thought to himself.

"Hi, Johnny! How's it goin' tonight?" Dick recognized the pizza delivery boy. Dick had worked late in his office many evenings and ordered in pizza. "How's school going?" Dick knew Johnny was a sophomore at SEMO University.

"Oh, it's goin' just fine Mr. Steele! Next week is spring break!" Johnny was a friendly, polite and ambitious young man. Dick had grown to really like the kid.

"Look, Johnny, here's a twenty dollar bill. Just keep the change! It takes a lotta money to entertain those young college gals these days!" Dick handed Johnny the $20 and winked at him.

"Thank you so much, Mr. Steele! And you have a good evening now!" Johnny smiled broadly, and Dick knew he appreciated the big tip he had just been handed.

As Johnny walked back to his car, a late model silver Honda Civic, Dick looked outside, inhaled the fresh spring air and noted that the outside temperature was still rather warm and balmy. The Bradford pear trees surrounding the office were blooming and spring flowers, which their gardener, Mr. Roberts, had cultivated so carefully were just beginning to emerge from their planting beds. As he turned to lock the office front door, his memory flashed back to when he had been Johnny's age and a sophomore at MIZZOU. "Ah, those were the good ol' days!" he thought to himself and sighed.

Back at his desk, Dick started in on the pizza and continued to review his NCAA basketball bracket sheet. Dick loved college basketball. He had played roundball in high school, but he was not offered a scholarship at MIZZOU, so instead he focused his time and energies on his studies. Many times since graduation, Dick had wondered what might have happened had he tried out for the team as a walk-on. Ah, the many 'What ifs?' in his life!

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothing ever seems to fit
Hangin' around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

What I've got they used to call the blues
Nothin' is really wrong
Feelin' like I don't belong
Walkin' around
Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

Funny but it seems I always wind up here with you
Nice to know somebody loves me
Funny but it seems that it's the only thing to do
Run and find the one who loves me.

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

BRADLEY Braves
"Where did Bradley come from? Missed this one altogether, but so did the other guys in the office. I'm still OK!" he reasoned.

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got so much honey, the bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh.

I don't need no money, fortune, or fame.
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
with my girl.
I've even got the month of May
with my girl (fade)

GONZAGA Bulldogs
"Dang. Took Indiana here. I should've listened to Michelle on this one!" Michelle Morgan from Los Angeles was a big college basketball fan and was hugely supportive of the Pac-10 and all west coast teams.

Smile an everlasting smile
A smile could bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'Cause that would bring a tear to me
This world has lost it's glory
Let's start a brand new story
Now my love right now there'll be
No other time and I can show you
How my love
Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away
You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away
It's only words, and words are all
I have to take your heart away

UCLA Bruins
"Check. Got that one!"

Love, look at the two of us
Strangers in many ways
We've got a lifetime to share
So much to say
And as we go
From day to day
I'll feel you close to me
But time alone will tell
Let's take a lifetime to say
"I knew you well"
For only time will tell us so
And love may grow
For all we know.

Love, look at the two of us
Strangers in many ways
Let's take a lifetime to say
"I knew you well"
For only time will tell us so
And love may grow
For all we know.

UCONN Huskies
"Yep. Everyone in the office had picked UConn to go far in the tournament!"

Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

Hey Jude, don't be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.

And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.

Hey Jude, don't let me down.
You have found her, now go and get her.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin,
You're waiting for someone to perform with.
And don't you know that it's just you, hey Jude, you'll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then you'll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh.

Na Na Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na, hey Jude...

WASHINGTON Huskies
"Hmmmm! Singerbabe's alma mater! Michelle also picked the Huskies, and I did listen to her on this one! Besides, even though I saw Illinois whip Missouri by 32 points, I have not been impressed with the ILLINI."

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

GEORGE MASON Patriots
"Never heard of this school before the tournament! Well, the other guys didn't pick George Mason either!"

I know you
Don't know what I'm going through
Standing here looking at you
Well let me tell you that it hurts so bad
It makes me feel so sad
It makes me hurt so bad
To see you again
Like needles and pins people say
You've been making out OK
She's in love don't stand in her way
But let me tell you that it hurts so bad
It makes me feel so bad
It's gonna hurt so bad if you walk away
Why don't you stay and let me make it up to you
Stay I'll do anything you want me to
You loved me before please love me again
I can't let you go back to him
Please don't go please don't go
It hurts so bad it hurts so bad it hurts so bad
I'm begging you please please don't go please

WICHITA STATE Shockers
"Nope. Picked the Tennessee Volunteers instead! Damn, how did they lose to Wichita State? This has been a crazy tournament this year!"

***Ring. Ring. Ring.*** "Hmmmm? Who's calling me on my cell phone." Dick wondered to himself. "I don't recognize this number on my Caller ID. Looks to be from out of state."

"Hello, Dick Steele." He answered.

"Hi sweetie! This is Michelle!" When he heard her voice, he immediately recognized that it was Michelle Morgan from Los Angeles calling.

"Hi baby! Ya caught me workin' late at the office!" Dick smiled. He was glad to hear Michelle's sensuous voice. She was always so happy, so perky.

"My secretary made my reservations for the conference in L.A. yesterday. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!" Dick offered, knowing that Michelle would soon inquire anyway.

"Oh, hon, I am so looking forward to meeting you!" Michelle replied.

"Michelle, I'm not certain what will happen between us out there. I want you to understand that, hon." Dick was offering an explanation where Michelle had not asked for one.

"I understand, Dick. We'll just meet as good friends, and see what happens from there." she wanted to make Dick comfortable with their planned rendezvous.

"Friends. Ya, friends" Dick replied nervously.

"Well hon, gotta tackle a bunch of case files right now. Great to hear your voice! Can I call you tomorrow night?" Dick had suddenly become uncharacteristicly nervous and he just wanted to postpone their conversation.

"Sure, baby! Call me around 8 or 9 pm your time." Michelle responded.

"Great! Until tomorrow night then? Bye, hon!" Suddenly it dawned upon Dick Steele that he and Michelle were arranging what would likely turn into a sexual encounter and that he was a married man.

We've only just begun to live,
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way.
And yes, We've just begun.

Before the rising sun we fly,
So many roads to choose
We start our walking and learn to run.
And yes, We've just begun.

Sharing horizons that are new to us,
Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
Working together day to day
Together.

And when the evening comes we smile,
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow,
And yes, We've just begun.

"Wow!" he thought to himself. The song lyrics had not been lost on Dick Steele. "The timing of that Carpenters song! Just when I get off the phone with Michelle! Lord, are you trying to speak to me?" he wondered to himself. Dick had never ever cheated on his wife, Donna, during their entire marriage. "What was he about to do?!"

VILLANOVA Wildcats
"Check. Got 'em!"

BOSTON COLLEGE Eagles
"Check. Got 'em! The Eagles seem to be on fire!"

Well, I think I'm goin' out of my head.
Yes, I think I'm goin' out of my head
Over you,
Over you.

I want you to want me.
I need you so badly I can't think of anything but you--

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off of you.
You'd be like heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last, love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off of you.

Goin' out of my head over you,
Out of my head over you,
Out of my head
Day and night, night and day and night, wrong or right.

I love you, baby, and if it's quite alright, I need you baby
To warm the lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say,
Oh! Pretty baby, don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I've found you, stay
And let me love you, baby, let me love you...

I want you to want me.
I need you so badly, I can't think of anything but you.
Goin' out of my head over you (Can't take my eyes off of you).
Out of my head (You're just to good to be true).
Out of my head, day and night, night and day and night, wrong or right.
Night and day and night, wrong or right.
Night and day and night.
And I think I'm goin' out of my... head.

Feelings of tremendous guilt suddenly poured over Dick Steele as he thought about the lyrics of this song by the 'Lettermen'. This had been one of Donna's favorite songs when they first started dating. He remembered listening to a favorite 'Lettermen' 8-track tape in his car as he held her on so many occasions before walking her to her parent's door steps. This song had become their song.

FLORIDA Gators
"Missed this one even though they won the SEC Post Season Tournament."

So in love, sad as can be, cause a pretty face got the best of me
Suddenly, you came into my life and gave it meaning and pure delight
Now good looks I?e learned to do without, Cause now I know it? love that really counts

Cause I know that beauty? only skin deep ya,ya,ya
I know that beauty? only skin deep oh,ya, yes it is

Now you speak your words warm and sincere, it lets me know that you love dear
A pretty face you may not posses, but what I like about you is your tenderness
A pretty face may be may be some guys taste, but I?l that lovin?any old place

Cause I know that beauty? only skin deep ya,ya,ya
And you know that beauty? only skin deep oh,ya, oh baby

My friends ask what do I see in you? But it goes deeper than the eye can view
You have a pleasin?personality and that? an ever lovin?rare quality
Now show me a girl, a girl that? fine, an I?l choose the one with true lovin?every
time

Because I know that beauty? only skin deep ya,ya,ya
And I believe that beauty? only skin deep oh,ya

So if your lookin?for a lover, don? judge a book by it? cover
She may be fine on the outside, but soooo untrue on the inside

I know that beauty? only skin deep ya,ya,ya
And you know that beauty? only skin deep oh,ya

GEORGETOWN Hoyas
"Nope. Picked Ohio State instead."

We've tried our hand at love before.
We've been around the game enough to know the score.
But then is then, and now is now.
And now is all that matters anyhow.

Make believe it's your first time, leave your sadness behind.
Make believe it's your first time, and I'll make believe it's mine.

The door is closed, it's you and me.
We'll take our time with love, the way it ought to be.
This moment's ours, tonight's the night.
And if we fall in love, that's all right.

Make believe it's your first time, leave your sadness behind.
Make believe it's your first time, and I'll make believe it's mine.

So close your eyes and hold me close.
Let our hearts pretend that love is ours to share tonight, and it might
never end.

Make believe it's your first time, leave your sadness behind.
Make believe it's your first time, and I'll make believe it's mine.
Make believe it's your first time, and I'll make believe it's mine.

"Hell, I can't even concentrate!" Dick thought to himself. "Michelle has got me all aroused and confused. I gotta get her off my mind!" he tried to encourage himself.

"Think I'll have a drink. That'll relax me!" he justified to himself.

I don't presume to understand your situation, hon, so I can only wish you well. Happiness within your marriage or, if that is not possible, then happiness with someone else!
