Morning Playlist

I’m an 80’s music geek. I love it. I think it was one of the best pop music eras of all time. While I have very eclectic tastes in music, this morning was a shamefully big-haired 80’s playlist kind of day. You can draw your own inferences here, but allow me to share…

“Strip” ‒ Adam Ant ‒ What a way to start the day. Adam Ant was sexy in a very war paint on the face of a hot British sexpot kind of way. “We’re just following ancient history. If I strip for you, will you strip for me?” Don’t look up pics of him now. They aren’t as hot. Believe me.

“The Final Countdown” ‒ Europe ‒ I know, it was shameful hair-band metal. But you can’t deny the call of the opening synthesizer. It’s recognizable even if you haven’t heard the song in years. And the lead singer was hot. Made me wish I could change my name to Carrie.

“Tarzan Boy” (a/k/a The Listerine Song) ‒ Who cares who it is by? You know, the oh oh oh oh song. Fucking catchy. Stupid, but catchy.

“Personal Jesus” ‒ Depeche Mode ‒ Holy god, don’t even let me think about David Gahan (singer) in that super curled cowboy hat, dark glasses and a shirt unbuttoned to his navel. Yeah, I need to pray, or say “oh god”. Hot music, still very dance-able, even if the songs are interminably long by today’s standards. “Reach out, touch faith…” Sure, David, if that’s what you wanna call it.

“One Of My Kind” ‒ INXS ‒ I thought Michael Hutchence was quite possibly one of the sexiest men alive in the 80’s. He would be still if he weren’t dead by whatever means. “So slide over here and give me a moment. I’ve got to let you know, you’re one of my kind.” His voice just exuded sex, even when he whispered.

“Die Without U” ‒ PM Dawn ‒ Another song that if I could play piano, I’d want to know how to play it. And gratuitous usage of snapping. Mellow, sad, and wonderful.

“Wild Boys” ‒ Duran Duran ‒ You knew they had to be in here somewhere. What female my age didn’t have posters of Simon LeBon or Nick Rhodes on her wall? This is another one that hasn’t aged well though. Still, groovy music, total guilty pleasure.

“Motown Philly” ‒ Boyz to Men ‒ Yeah, loved ‘em. I was told once that it was for white people. Whatever, I could cabbage patch like a mutha to it. And whoever is in the background yelling “go go go go go” just makes me cabbage patch harder.

“Never Tear Us Apart” ‒ INXS ‒ Told you I liked them. Quite possibly one of the best slow dance songs of my rebellious teenage years. “If I hurt you, I’d make wine from your tears.” The base line groove is dashboard slapping good. Passion, pure passion. “I was standing, you were there, two worlds collided.” God I miss slow dancing. I wanna have a homecoming dance.

“Let’s Go All the Way” ‒ Sly Fox ‒ Reminds me of my 8th grade crush, Dickey Cleveland. Gawd, I used to beg to wear his letter jacket all the time. Loved him. No, I didn’t go all the way with him. I kissed him, once. Bliss. (Okay, it was horrible, but at the time I thought it was bliss.)

“Jessie’s Girl” ‒ Rick Springfield ‒ I realize I have just won the ridicule of serious music fans everywhere. However, I am a girl… a girl who watched General Hospital in middle school. And back then, he was the shit. Don’t even let me start with the air guitar on this one. And look out if I’ve had too much to drink and this is on the karaoke list.

“Break My Stride” ‒ Matthew Wilder ‒ A bit more eclectic, catchy synthesizer tune. “Last night I had the strangest dream. I sailed away to China, in a little rowboat to find ya. And you said you had to get your laundry clean.” Yeah, I have those too, Matt.

“Closer” (a/k/a Fuck You Like An Animal) ‒ NIN ‒ Oh sigh… is there another rhythm to have sex to? Is there a song you can dance more suggestively to? Every time I hear it, I see Trent Reznor flicking his tongue on the microphone. It makes me wanna put one hand on my chest, and another down the front of my panties and dance. “you let me violate you, you let me desecrate you, you let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you.” Uhm, yes, thanks, I did. Then the whispered part near the end, soooo hot, “through every forest, above the trees, within my stomach, scraped off my knees. I drink the honey inside your hive. You are the reason I stay alive.” And you thought it was just about sex. Why would I listen to that right before I walked into work? Stupid, now I’m all worked up.

Do we see why I am so easily amused now?

Baltimora did "Tarzan Boy".

Dumb song, but I really like it too. The video was a riot back in the day, as long as your blood alcohol level was at least .10 and on the rise.

Let me drive. I like the view

Addressing the ones I agree with...

Adam Ant... like a MF! Kickin' it Burundi style!

Duran Duran - Everybody was a Duranny at one time or another; I still love those guys. And what about John Taylor? I know of at least four girls in HS that slept with me because they thought I looked like him (it was the hair). Was it Milton or Burroughs that inspired "Wild Boys"?

Depeche Mode - Ever hear Johnny Cash's cover of that song? Dark.

NIN - this was actually released in '93, and one of my least fav on an otherwise great concept album. "Downward Spiral" sometimes sounds like an operatic version of Dostoyevsky's "Crime & Punishment" to me.

Baltimora, that's right. I knew that somewhere in the recesses of my brain. I don't remember the video, and will definitely have to look it up now for a giggle.

Voodoo - Nice assessment. Yeah, John Taylor was hot too. I have no idea what inspired "Wild Boys" only that the video was corny, but not as bad as "Hungry Like The Wolf". Yes, I've heard Cash's cover, and it is dark, which ruins it for me. I like it sexy instead. So you don't like NIN "Closer"?

What about the TRUE hair-metal of the 80s? Like "(She's Got the) Looks That Kill" by Motley Crue or "Still of the Night" by Whitesnake? And, I was much more of a "Goody Two Shoes" fan...

Those take me back... I love the old music too. I think everyone stays in love with the music they grow up with. When I hear many of these songs it brings me back to a special place, a feeling, or a person I associate with that music.

All very good tunes, folks. Like I said, that just happened to be that CD. Yes, I'm the proud owner of Monster Ballads (one and two), have a shameful crush on Rick Astley, loved Wham and George Michael more (don't care if he's gay if he'll wear those fucking jeans), had enormously big hair with perfect feathers.
