Summer Reading

Normally I spend my time reading non-fiction, mostly business related books. It’s summer time and I wanted to share some of my favorite authors. Please let me know what books I need to read:

Mark Helprin - Easily in the top five with me. His imagination helps me look at the world in different ways. I highly recommend A Winters Tale and Soldier of the Great War.

Tom Robbins - The first time I read Even Cow Girls get the Blues, I knew I found a keeper. All of his books have been thought provoking and fun.

Tom Wolfe - I think he's one of the best social commentators this country has. He has consistently captured the essence of any topic he has taken on. His fiction and sociology are equally interesting. The opening scene in Man in Full is just the best, especially if you are in the business world.

Kinky Friedman - For Summertime, you have to read at least one village irregular book. Some of you really old people may remember Kinky as the front man for Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys. Anyone that has that sort of name for his band has to be a fun, quirky and irreverent writer.

Neal Stephenson - My new favorite. I would start off with Cryptonomicon. If you like that book, then taking on the Baroque Trilogy would not be a chore. The books are very different. The common ground is how well the story lines are written, characters drawn and research done.

That's about it for this post. Let me know what books I need to read.

good choices! if you like kinky friedman you'll love carl hiassen...start with Sick Puppy or Skinny Dip! i also loved neal stephenson's books and definitely agree with the order. Cryptonomicon is phenomenal but if you get bored reading a 1000 page book don't bother with the Baroque Trilogy!

personal all-time favorite...The River Why by david james duncan. quick read and well worth it. for you, i'd also try The Brothers K, a much longer and equally good book by the same author!

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll definitely look into them after I finish Snow Crash.

You're welcome. I highly recommend a Winters Tale by Mark Helprin. I think you would probably enjoy it.
