Don't We Live In a Land Where We Speak English?

I just saw a blurb on yahoo titled:

Bush wants newcomers to speak English.

Uhhhh.... so?

If you want to transplant to America -- either by swimming, running, sneaking, hiding, boating, or flying -- shouldn't you learn to speak English?!

It only makes sense to me. Don't you think?

I have been bitching and moaning about this one for a very long time. The building that I live in was recently bought by a couple whose first language is Spanish. It is a trial to get something across to either one of them. In the end I get on line, type a note and have one of the translation sites do the job for me.

I work for a physician's answering service and can't tell you how frustrating it is to have a call come in and you can't understand a bloody word being said. It is not only those that speak Spanish, but heavily accented English being spoken by all ethnic groups...

Not that I object to people coming here to make a better life, but in America we speak English and if one plans to live here, one needs to be able to speak the language.

hotandhorny: I totally agree. I, too, have worked in medical-related fields (and retails, for heaven's sakes) and I was always amazed by that. Truthfully, when I was younger and much more of a sun worshipper than I am, I had the ability to become very tan and I would have soooo many people come up to me and start speaking Spanish. Then, when I told them I didn't speak spanish... they would give me the dirtiest looks like I was faking or something.

Andrew Dice Clay used to have a routine that said something along the lines of ... There should be signs at all airports that say: If you can't speak the language, get the fuck out. (Or something very close to that.)

All too true.

I recently heard a story about a man suing a hospital because no one in the ER spoke Spanish. Yet, he was in America. Perhaps it would have been wise of him to learn the language spoken by those who were trying to save his life!

Ah, Its you again, Your Angel Feathers and your Blood Stains...
