Next to Where I Stand -- Still.

I have this flag.
Held aloft, it announces my arrivals.
Dragged along, it murmurs my state.
But it is mine, even though it is:
Weathered from tasting the saltwater
Shredded from resisting the hurricane
Shot through with the memories of wars.

I have this stake.
It holds my flag.
Long ago it was sharp --
A needle to pierce the places next to where I stand
Or stood (for a while anyway).
The tip is now blunted from overuse,
The length smoothed by the oil of my palm
And the transference of splinters to my calluses
While I grip it,
While I clutch it,
While it waits to be plunged next to me again.

I have these shoes.
The road they travel is not less or more,
But they surprise me where they go.
Like when they find a beach and sink in sand
Until the waves overlap and wet the toes.
Or when they step on coals that burn the soles
But protect the tender foot inside.

Or when they slowly and suddenly stopped
Right next to where you stood.
Where I now stand.

I have this flag
It is wet again with the rain
And has a few new holes,
And more tattered threads,
From one more disaster survived.
But it is mine,
It is familiar,
And I think I will keep it for a while.

I have this stake
It is in the ground
(Probably a little more blunted)
Still plunged in the place
Next to where I stand
Next to where you stood
For a little while anyway.
It still works just fine,
It still holds my flag,
It is familiar,
And I think I'll keep it for a while.

I have these shoes,
They still want to take me places.
They are comfortable, they are familiar,
And they took me here,
Where I am not leaving,
Where I will always return when I wander.

This patch of land where I still stand --
Where the flag hangs low
Where the stake was plunged --
This little patch I call my own,
Was mine before,
Is still mine now.
And I am not going anywhere.

Because this flag is not white,
This stake is not cracked,
These shoes are still useful,
And this is my home.

sometimes just to "stand" is all you can do

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

Yes, you survived, and I think you'll be just fine.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

Dude you are the lyrical master so keep flying that flag and calling this place home. If you ever get tired of holding that stake or need to rest those shoes all you need to do is ask. You have many friends here that would gladly help you with whatever burdens you carry.

May your flag never be white... Your shoes, always show wear... And your smile return soon. Monster Hugs... and lots and lots and lots of candy.

Why do I love you so? Flags tattering, battles raging, running for our lives and hiding under the battlements...either up to the knees in squishy mud or getting a is nice to know that you're not raising the white flag just yet. There are adventures still to be had. Just remember that you're the troubadour...

May your gorgeous flag wave for evermore, at home or abroad may your stake stand tall, and may your shoes, no matter how worn never be forsworn, you say you are iron man, I say you are knight in shining armor, you say you are a mountain set to crumble, I say so was Mt. Rushmore, you say you are barely standing, I say you stand tall and proud but ever touchably human. There's no place like home, there's no place like home! And as phuc_buddy said there are lots of us that would be happy to hold up the flag while you take a break!
