Icarus, Daedalus, and This.

"Do not fly high, lest the glue should melt in the sun, and the wings should drop off, and do not fly near the sea, lest the pinions should be detached by damp."

Imprisoned and exiled in Crete by King Minos, Daedalus and his son Icarus longed for home in Athens. Daedalus was an inventor, by trade, and had a long list of triumphs to his credit, including the invention of sails for ships, folding chairs, the axe, the awl and the bevel. His greatest work, however, was his most destructive.

Toiling away in prison, Daedalus could not keep his hands idle. With feathers, some wax and some string, Daedalus created wings with which to fly. Icarus, the son, cared little for the complexities of inventions. He simply loved to play with the wax, and the feathers, and the trappings of the completed invention.

Daedalus decided to create two pairs of wings, one for him and one for his son, which they would use to fly far and free to Athens. When they were ready, Daedalus, the inventor, gave his son some advice:

'neither to fly high, lest the glue should melt in the sun, and the wings should drop off, nor to fly near the sea, lest the pinions should be detached by damp.'

The son, Icarus, as all sons will do -- even when it matters most -- disregarded his father's advice. He flew too high, too fast. The wax melted, and Icarus plummeted before his father's eyes into what is now known as the Icarian Sea.

Too high, and the fall is horrific.

Too low, and the dampness will cause you to fall apart.

Daedalus knew of his son's proclivities, knew he was impetuous. Daedalus knew well that Icarus needed instruction, and yet was willing to risk that Icarus would not listen, because the flight home was too important, because escaping the prison was too vital, and because that is what parents do for their children.

Before the fall, Icarus was as close to heaven as any human has ever been.

It was the best thing, and the worst thing, in the world for him.

My name is Icarus. And I never listen to my father.

Uh huh. And you know this is why I keep my feet on the ground.

A harsher, less mellow Seriously would tell you that's why you'll never get anywhere....but I won't say that. Because I love my earth-bound Taurean Unwendy.

Excellent post. You are YOU, you are unique. I hope my sons don't listen to their father either (in certain ways)
You're making me THINK too much, dammit.........

I have never believed that thinking too much is a bad thing. I am what I am.
