comment whore.. wooohooo.. met a beautiful man today..

I met the most incredible , Beautiful man today.. Funny.. kind.. a true gentleman , Extremely intelligent , worldly .. you name it this man has it all
We met at a local Hardware store.. I needed a screw..( I know what your thinking ) not that kind of screw...as I walked in I noticed him right away we had eye to eye contact and exchanged a smile..He had the most beautiful smile I have ever seen.. But through his smile I could see a bit of sadness.. I could tell the clerks were telling him they could not help him as they stared at this big piece of ugly 4"x 5" dirty, rusty , metal in his hand as square and strong as his jaw.
He was standing by the register as I was paying for my purchase and I heard the clerk say to this man " I'm sorry we don't have a handle for your hoe "

Yes I could not help but let out a Lil snicker.. shame on me for thinking of the pun..but I recovered by saying .. sooo that is what that is
with a very serious look on my face... The man looked at me and said yes I need a 3 " handle for my hoe " again.. this time I just blushed and so did the clerks..He continued to say " but all they have is 2" handles for my hoe.".
there were more then snickers.. mind you this is a mom and pop hardware store, in a small community where everyone knows one another,, but this man was a stranger.. a beautiful stranger I would soon find out.
So I suggested other places.. asked the owner if he knew of anywhere he could find 3" handle for his hoe..
the owner replied I only have my 3"s for my hoe.. and everyone was giggling except this man..
I tried to recover again and I noticed again the sadness in the mans smile.. He said thank you as he started to walk out.. then the owner felt bad and said " really sorry we could not help you" The 85 year old man turned around and said thanks anyways its just that this hoe belonged to my daddy and his daddy and it was the last thing my son had in his hands before he had a stroke and died..

A sudden silence.. I felt a lump in my throat.. I think everyone that heard him felt the same lump.. I had to say something.. I asked.. where is the original handle??.. He stepped back in turned around and told us all it broke in 3 places where his son had fell on top of it .. the handle broke his fall from hitting a jagged boulder.. His great grand father made the handle and hoe.. I had visions of a man in the day sitting carving the wood.. burning the iron for most likely his lively hood of farming. A piece that would to be passed down to son to son.
All of a sudden everyone wanted to touch the dirty, rusty piece of iron..
I asked what did you do with the broken pieces of the handle.??. He told me his wife made a picture frame out of the wood for a family portrait.. The frame turned out beautiful and was just past down to his first grand daughter.another piece of art that began to pass to the men in the family and now will be past on to the woman..a piece of wood that was carefully made by there ancestors..

Now this beautiful 85 year old man had all our attention.. told us story's of the farm in Mims Florida.. His family gained land from there slave holders... we all listened to him for almost 2 hours.. he was so interesting and so loving.. spoke of his late wife and how beautiful she was.. how copper nails will kill a stump.. He grew lavender to make sure the scent was all over the home to keep the children relaxed and wife happy.. has 9 sons 3 Doctors 1 coach 1 writer for a paper ..4 teachers... and they all farm.and how the rusty old iron had meant so much to him..
well the next thing I knew I'm on the phone my father in law that knows how to get ahold of anything to find this beautiful man a handle for his hoe. .. and its going to be found.. all of a sudden names and numbers were popping up everywhere.. from everyone in the tiny hardware store..
The old man looked at us all and said.. see what a little hoeing around can get you.. we all laughed hysterically..
I'm so happy something made me speak up and ask what happened to the original handle?? oh yes.. it was the stars that made me ask.. they wanted me to learn something..

don't take beautiful people for granted.. they live life.. share life and get more life then dicks in bonnets

Dont you just love treasures being past down to family ??
Don't you just love comment whores ??

You definately touched my heart with this one! If only everyone had the compassion that you have for others. You helped that man get back a part of his life that may have been lost forever. What you did was a beautiful thing. Sometimes I think people forget that we are all here together!

Thank you hun..love your post as well.
I have had to learn the hard way to stop and smell the roses and not let stuff like being rushed get in the way.. I truly believe everyone has a good heart we just let our time rob us of showing how much heart we all have... I only spoke up and made the man stop from leaving the store.. took a nano second. the rest was everyone in the hardware store. we all just need a nudge to come together..

Dear "MRSMUFFLAND".

You did what some, including professionals, have forgotten ... it starts with a smile ... you took your time ... listened ... and made suggestions to help ... to take care ... to solve ... That is the difference ... anywhere and everywhere ... I like your way ...

That was a lovely story. I am lucky, in that I am a makeup artist and hairdresser. I get to do old ladies hair sometimes and when ya do that, you have time to chat. I love to hear their stories of how they found love and lived their life. The stories of the old days and the hardships during the war are brill, they had such courage back then. I doubt that most of us could survive like they did, they were a different breed.

Bye everyone, it was a blast

SacredStarDance replies on 7/15/2006 2:33 pm:
thank you.. Like you I adore older people with storys of there past.. and I agree I dont think we are made of the same stuff to survive all that they have. They are amazing.. and what they past down to us should never be taken for granted..

Very, very cool. I recently went to luch by myself to this little diner like place that also has the most wonderful ice cream. An older man came in. Seemed to be a regular. There was something about him that was so relaxed. He wasw so at peace with the world. I wish I had the time to go talk to him. Not sure how I would have started a conversation but it would have been great, I just know it.

How cool is that. I have a blanket that was made for me when I was a baby that my daughter now has. And I made a blanket for her that I hope she will pass down to her children.

Juicy
