Bracing for the storm

Hurricane Rita has me worried.

We're 300 miles from the Texas Gulf Coast, but the weather forecasts say Rita will still technically be a hurricane when it hits my town sometime early Sunday morning.

My family and I will do what we must to stay safe. I don't expect flooding here, but I do expect a lot of rain and wind. I hope nothing happens to my house, but if it does, it's nothing that can't be fixed or replaced.

My biggest worry is being without power for an extended length of time. That's been known to happen here. A few years ago there was an ice storm at Christmas that knocked out power for several days. As it happened, my family and I were visiting relatives in West Texas, and we missed it completely. But a lot of friends and relatives were not so lucky.

I'm not taking any chances. Today I'm stocking up on batteries, bottled water, and canned food. And knowing my luck, I'd better buy a couple of extra can openers, too.

I'm concerned about my brother. He lives north of Houston. The only phone number I have for him is his home phone, but no one answers, and there's no answering machine. He also doesn't have a cell phone. (He's even slower to adopt these things than I am.) But he's a smart guy, and he won't fool around if things look bad. I'm sure he's on his way out of town by now; he's probably in the thick of that traffic mess I saw on the news this morning. If he shows up here, he's more than welcome.

If you live in Rita's path, I hope you're not taking any unnecessary chances. Seek safety while you can.

It sounds like you are taking the proper precautions. Stock up now...Or perhaps you should think about heading north for a bit...
Either way...Take care..Be safe.

Be safe PCB, this is a monster storm and I dont thinks she's going to be nice. Remember she is like Katrina, fierce and just as deadly. I pray for everyone in the path of this storm.

I am the real deal! "Come Get Me!!!"

From my limited experience with hurricanes (1 Category 3) The most difficult part was dealing with panicky people in the area. I boarded up the windows in our house, and went shopping for batteries, candles, canned food, etc.. I was in far more danger shopping than I was during the hurricane. I actually had people at home depot going through my cart when my back was turned. I also had a guy at the gas station get mad at me for not pumping gas fast enough.

Hopefully the people in Texas have cooler heads than the people in Tampa did. Just be careful

I'm sure you'll be fine.
You need that stuff anyway.
