Dandelion Treasures

A child on an expedition
returns home with a fist full of gold
and presents to his mother
(the object of his childish affection)
a bouquet of Dandelions.
The scourge of our finely manicured lawns,
The dreaded weed itself!
Yet, in the moment of giving,
the child only knows
what only a child can see...
A bouquet of beautiful flowers,
befitting the noblest of queens.
How true is the mothers love
who accepts such a glorious gift
and places it with honor in her finest vase
(even if the vase is an old jelly jar)
to be viewed by all who may come into her home.
For the mother knows
that though she displays but a simple weed,
had it been the most glorious rose,
it could not have improved upon the love felt
by the hand that picked it.
With no greater intention
than to present a token of love.
Saddened I am for the one
who only sees the weed
for surely they cannot recognize love
even when it stands before them.
It is said that with age comes wisdom
Although I'm not sure which
would be the better to have
the wisdom of age,
or the innocence of childhood.
I know when I was young
there was a great deal I didn't know
and of what I did know
there was much I didn't understand
now that I am older
and know a great deal more
I find that I understand less
than when I was a child.
I no longer pick weeds
to hand out as gifts of love
should I find myself
one day
upon my deathbed
with my family gathered round
should a daughter or son
be they grandchildren or my own
place within my hand
but a single dandelion
picked just for me
and no one else
then I might pass from this world
knowing I was truly loved.
And should I return to life as a flower
I hope to find myself one day
in an old jelly jar
sitting on the kitchen counter.

So true these words. Just yesterday I took a 3 year old out for a walk. He speaks little English yet when we arrived back with a fistful of dandelions both yellow and fluffy he understood the meaning of his offering to his sick Mother. The joy of his simple gesture was as healing as any medicine.
