Anyone want a used domain?

I had forgotten about one I owned. Tonight, I got a message from the hosting company saying it had exceeded it's bandwidth for the month. Motherfucker. I've complained to them before about spiders and such things.

Well, I go in and look. The entire site was overrun with spam, from the forums to the front page. To make matters worse, the PNphpBB administration software attached to the site isn't working properly and I'm not able to block. So, I had to lock the forums and all commenting on the front page. Yeah, that took the entire night. I so had better things to do, like watch movies or sleep.

I had planned on taking the site down when the domain name comes up for renewal next month. I was thinking of selling the entire site on eBay, but with the spam attacks and the hosting company not caring, I might just sell the domain name, so someone can take it elsewhere.

No, I'm not going to give the name of the site here. Too many of you know how to do who is look ups. However, I will be posting stories from there here.

Oh well. It's not like there was a lot of site particiation anyway.

That sucks!! Good Luck selling it.

This is so mad. My vanilla blog-site hit the webhosts CPU limit a few months ago, solely from blog-spammers spamming fake comments and trackbacks and refferals. It took hours to install more security modules and more hours to clean up the crap.

I miss the good old days, when you could just stick a website online and wouldn't have to worry about all this stuff.

MissAnnThrope replies on 8/28/2006 9:19 am:
I'm so pissed off. Even with splitting the thread in the forums and deleting the threads with nothing but spam, it took me hours.

The trouble is, I know nothing about installing security modules. What really pissed me off is, I've had new membership on the site disabled, but a bunch were able to join up and leave comments on front page articles that were nothing but spam. So, I had to disable comments too, or delete around 1000 ads. All in the last few weeks.

So, as the site gets little real traffic and the domain is up for renewal next month, I'm taking it down. Instead of having to go in and ban at the IP level every time.

What I want to know is, if the googlebot crawler only tracks what pages are there for the search engine, why the fuck was it trying to add posts to the forum?

I used to play admin on a site that had a good interactive membership. It was a friendly place, very welcoming ... until the spammers and vandals found it. Then I spent my nights trying to foil them - and tidy up where they'd got through.

You can get a certain sense of pride in a job well done - the first time. After that it becomes profoundly depressing and exceptionally tiring.

And it's VERY hard to be philosophical about it ...

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:40 am:
Yeah. I had to disable commenting. But there doesn't seem to be a way to disable new posts by non-members, as the forum control panel seems to be fucked up. So, while I'm deleting less than what I had to, I'm still deleting a few posts a day.

I just want to know why the googlebot, which is only supposed to index, keeps trying to post messages.

Yeah, if you aren't getting anything out of it, why pay for a site that isn't active except for spam?? I too know the joys of exceeding bandwith....except my site is free. I recently changed over from a subdomain to an actual domain through my boyfriend who runs his own business It is harder to keep spammers out, but my site is of my writing and music fiction and stuff so I just have visitors and not a message board (yet)

I'm leaving the site end of March. To those who want to keep in touch, see blog for details.

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:41 am:
Exactly. So, it's coming down.

Wow, the AdultFriendFinder censors denied my earlier comment. I think I know why, let me try again.

I use the same type of admin software as you. If it's not blocking properly you might need an upgrade. I get spammers everyday, trying to sell prescription drugs, porn sites, casinos, etc. The easiest way for me to keep track of who is coming in was to require that people become members to post anything and to get approval by me before they can become a member. I go in, check their info and most times delete the account. At last that way I don't have to go in and clean up non-subject posts. I've been lucky to catch some online while I was there and just block their IP address.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

I have no idea what I need. I know when I go into PNphpBB2 from the administration menu, all I can get is the front page. No matter what link I hit. It's very odd.

wow...I have a domain I haven't checked on in a year or so. I should check on it. having all sorts of troubles on this site. I can't see pics at all even after calling. sad, really.

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:45 am:
Heh. Why do you still have the domain if you don't use it? That's why I'm taking down the one in question. It's a dead site, no chance of recovery.

This site has been having major issues. Pics go missing, pics can't be seen, networks are crashing. I wish they'd fix the issues, instead of adding new cosmetic features.

I had no idea that I could have sold two old ones that I had.

One had a name that was probably saleable too.

Dammit woman, why didnt you tell me earlier?

As a user of Lexis Nexus you might find my post of today's date somewhat amusing

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:47 am:
I would have told you, but you never asked about it. People sell domains on eBay all the time.

I haven't had access to the Lexis Nexus Universe in a few years. I should see if I can access it from the computers at the public library.

Missann, excuse me for responding off topic, but when are you going to comment on the Pluto situation? I've been waiting patiently for your opinion. Pluto got a raw deal, and it seems to me that you are the official defender of the downtrodden/raw deal getters. What's up, girl?

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:50 am:
Pluto has gotten a raw deal from day one. No pants, and can only bark. He's actually been shown as Goofy's pet. I'm waiting for him to get rabies and kill Mickey, Minny and Goofy.

I've got my fingers crossed for you that it sells quickly. And I'd be interested to hear your take on Pluto too! Why don't you come on over and join us at LAST CAMPFIRE OF THE SUMMER And be sure to at least say "hi" so we know that you're there!

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:51 am:
Campfires? Doesn't that mean camp is involved? I hope Jason Vorhees didn't show up.

Aint it a bitch? I have a number of sites too and the shit that hits them is unreal. Worst thing I did? Forgot to renew a domain name and it was snapped up. 8 letter top level too! That hurts on a popular site.

MissAnnThrope replies on 9/9/2006 3:52 am:
I did that last year. I meant to forget to renew the one that is being spammed now and renew the other. It got reversed and I was pissed off. So the one I wanted died, and this one, well, it's about to die.
