A Gentle Response...

Please do not take offense to this Lustmirror…

I saw your comment on my blog about studying and natural talents. I figured I would make a separate response to it. I really enjoy your comments a great deal… you offer wonderful insight and analogies.

You commented on the fact that we all learn or act differently, which I totally agree with. You mentioned that some people have beautifully natural talents in life, which I agree with.

What I wanted to say though is…

Most people, who have an extreme talent for something, still study that talent. You used musicians as an example…

Well even the greatest “naturally talented” musicians have still taken the time to study their talent. They often do not need the help of their studies, but they still pay the proper respect of studying a little bit about what they do and how they do it.

I was a natural swordsman since the day I picked up a sword. I still study swordsmanship despite that fact. I am highly talented at romance as well, but I still read romance novels and ideas. I do not allow my talents to single-handedly go to my head. I always take the time to study every subject whether I am good at it or not. No matter how good I am, there is always still more to learn! In order to challenge myself in swordsmanship, I started studying the styles dating back to the 12th century. I knew nothing of the styles, and yet have mastered nearly all of the modern styles.

It is proper respect to study what you do regardless of how talented you may actually be at something!

Someone who solely relies on natural abilities is just arrogant. Being good at is fine, but without studying you may never know how to teach another because that student might not be naturally talented like you are.

A man is one who utilizes everything available and never allows for arrogance to take hold. It is a mans duty, to learn all aspects involved regardless of needing that knowledge or not.

That is what preparation is all about… being prepared to do or to teach if needed.

I despise prono... I am refering to medieval swordfighting. I hate fencing in the Musketeer style that is very popular today. Swordfighting to me is not "ever" meant to be a sport or a game. It is a martial art, and should only be employed for self defense or physical conditioning.
