When I first came to this area, I had to give up my soccer. There was no indoor competition, and I still needed to maintain my fitness level. I went to the web and started searching for possible replacements and hit on karate.

I phoned them and went up to check out the place. I was probably interested by the martial arts movies I had seen as a young guy.

Once starting it, I was surprised at the physical demands. Also by my lack of co-ordination. I was also surprised at the age of people in class, often my age or older.

I have now been doing karate for a bit over 12 months. I am about to attempt my green belt. They say you can get to black belt in 3 years but you really have to live at the dojo in order for this to come about. There is a fair amount of repetition and so maintaining interest can be tough.

When I look around and see the amount of people that have just neglected their health, I am even more thankful for mine.

Hope I can encourage people to use what they have for as long as they can. You know... if you don't use it, you will lose it.
