The Dance - Garth Brooks

This is a sad song but the mood is reflective and the tone is full recovery.

The Dance - Garth Brooks

Looking back, on the memories of
The dance we shared, neath the stars above
For a moment, all the world was right
How could I have known,
That you’d ever say goodbye.

Not an unusual start to a song about relationships. When things are going very well, we don’t even think about things ending.

And now, I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives, are better left to chance.
I could have saved the pain,
but I’d have had to miss the dance.

It’s so easy when a relationship ends to get caught up in the woulda, coulda, shouldas. And when feeling pain it is so easy to wish you’d never got started in the first place. Yet every person we’ve been close to leaves their imprint on us. My enjoyment of country music is a direct imprint from a woman I lived with for five years. She was a country fan. Were it not for her, these songs I have been blogging probably wouldn’t have played a role in my recovery.

Holding you, I held everything
For a moment, wasn’t I a king
If I’d only known, how the king would fall
And then, you know I might have saved it all

Another look back with the potential for regret. But the next verse reaffirms he doesn’t regret.

But now, I’m glad I didn’t know
The way all would end, the way it all would go
My life, it’s better left to chance.
I could have saved the pain,
but I’d have had to miss the dance.

It’s my life, it’s better left to chance
I could have saved the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance.

And to continue with the theme of this song, were it not for the dance, we wouldn’t be where we are today. I’m going to claim I am now ready to move on. I’m going to learn from my experiences and move on to the next phase in my life. You say you have your doubts after reading my blog? Sorry, “That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it." At least I feel that way when I finish singing this song.
