Serenading the Ladies

I was in a relationship with a woman for five years between my first and second marriage. She was a country fan and introduced me to country music during the outlaw years - Willie Nelson, Wayne Jennings, etc.

She wanted to get married. I wasn't ready. She finally gave up on me after 5 years. About that time the Willie Nelson album containing the song "Always On My Mind" was released. I've always regretted not treating her better. And she would have made a loving wife. That song helped me deal with my regrets.

Willie Neslon - Always on My Mind

Maybe I didn't love you,
quite as often as I could have.
Maybe I didn't treat you,
quite as good as I could have.
If I made you feel second best,
girl I'm sorry I was blind.
You were always on my mind.
You were always on my mind.

When I was served with my divorce papers and watched a twenty year relationship reach its final note, that song that had laid dormant in my mind for over 20 years popped back into my memory.

Singing that song helped me reconcile some of the feelings I was having and related them back to feelings from the past. It was my first Karaoke contest song.

Maybe I didn't hold you,
all those lonely lonely times.
I guess I never told you,
I'm so happy that you're mine.
Little things I could have said and done,
I just never took the time.
You were always on my mind.
You were always on my mind.

I started singing the song then an interesting thing happened. With a wireless mike, you can rove the room. Once I knew the lyrics cold, I started roaming the bar, singing the song to ladies. I'd get right in their faces with the mike, sometimes taking them totally by surprise at the beginning of the song.

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died.
Give me, give me one more chance to keep you satisfied.
Girl, I'll keep you satisfied.

The reaction was amazing. I discovered that most women have never had a man sing them a love song. One woman, sitting next to her boy friend, told me that it was one of the most romantic things that had ever happened to her.

Of course, some turned away. But others started to sing the song with me. Some sat there with this bright look in their eyes, totally enjoying the experience. And a few responded to the words

Maybe I didn't love you,
quite as often as i could have.
Maybe I didn't treat you,
quite as good as I could have.

by saying, "No, you didn't!!!"

I try to sing at least one song each evening that's a serenade the ladies song. My most interesting 'sing to the ladies' experience was in Key West a few weeks ago. The Karaoke setup didn't include wireless mikes. So the length of the mike cord limited who I could sing to. So I picked this tall large blonde lady in the front row. She seemed to enjoy the song.

After singing, I returned to my seat at the bar. The guy I was sitting next to informed me that the 'lady' I had just serenaded was a guy dressed in drag. ) Shortly after he/she came up to me and thanked me for the song.

What happens in Key West ....
