The Yellow Dog

The Yellow Dog

The sky is red on this lonely morning, and I am traveling back in time. Who knows what triggers memories maybe it was the cool air flowing through my open window, and the smell of the grass, or the laughter I heard that woke me up.

It is cold and I am standing at the bus stop with my hands in my pocket. One of my shoes is untied but I really don't care and pay it no attention. The chatterbox is talking, the girls are giggling, and I am the sleepy head.

I can hear the dads closing the doors to cars in distant driveways, and see the moms peek through curtains making sure everything is as it should be. We are the neighborhood kids, and we belong to everyone on the block.

The fun dad honks his horn and waves as he drives by and the grumpy dad follows but just passes in his angry car. The Car pool dads all pile into a van, while us kids begin to get louder and more playful. The girls are playing hopscotch while chatterbox digs in his backpack for a football. Lunch boxes and bags get stacked up at the edge of a drive way and we toss the ball around and I tie my shoe, catch the ball and become John Elway.

"Awwww Mannnnnnn"

The sputter of the yellow dog can be heard on the next street down, it’s almost time and my stomach starts to sink knowing the fun has to end in a few moments. The ball, the hopscotch, the kids, the moms, the dads, all have to begin the day.

I look down to the end of the block and see the yellow bus turning onto the street, and slowly making its way toward the stop. A mom yells from a kitchen window, "you kids get your bags!"

I grab my lunch box and back pack and unzip it to make sure I remembered to put my skelator in it for recess. The pecking order begins as we all fall into a line, the girls first and then the boys. We prepare for the morning battle of who is going to be the coolest and get to sit in the back of the bus.

The sputtering and coughing yellow dog crawls to a stop, the acid stench of the exhaust fills my lungs, and one by one, we take hold of the handle and step up into the bus.

Nice writting! I hated the bus! Had to ride it from grade 5 to 11. I always tried to sit in the back, that's were the "cool" kids sat!

WONDERFUL! I never took the bus, but the kids that lived on my street all walked to school together. We too did things like you mentioned. The boys would show off and toss the football around as we walked.

Great memories....thanks for bring them back for me!

That was so well written I could smell the exhaust fumes that used to make me sick whenever I'd sit in the back of the sarcasm intended, LOL, it would be nice to linger in those days once again, just for a little while....

I go back in my mind whenever I can because it was just a simpler time, whenever I'm stressed or worried about something I like to remember times when I didn't even know what stress and worry were.

Nicely don S. I did ride the bus to school, but I never caught it with a group of neighborhood kids. Just my group of siblings. At the age you are talking about ... we would be playing 'freeze tag' with the dog while waiting for the bus.

Funny where memory lane will take us at times isn't it.

Some of the worst times of my life began on mornings much like the one you describe. The day, bound to get incrementally worse after the bus deposited us to final destination. Somehow we made it through. Then the next day, more of the same. I still hate buses!

I remember it so vividly because I was describing the morning that the challenger blew up. I was in the 6th grad at the time.
