Which Token Latino Actor?

I'll disclaimer this by first stating that the word Latin is a reference meaning "of the Roman Empire" at it's roots and the Roman Empire of course refers to the entire lower mediterranean region of southern europe.

That being stated I will now say that genetically I claim to mostly be of American Indian descent of the tribes of central Mexico which have the Chichimec tribe at their root.

I will acknowledge that there is an inhernet similarty to the look of some of the Native American people to those of the mediterranrean based conquistadors and also I acknowledge that a certain degree of interbreeding of the conqerors also took place with the new and quite massive numbers of slavestock "indians".

But for some reason I don't like being called a Latino. (could be that imposed Latin based slave name thing, I'm still not sure) It is an extremely erroneous desrcriptive term and it's only real relevance has to do with the language which was imposed upon many of the Native American peoples by the conquering Spanish. Spanish being a modern form of old Latin, the language of the Roman Empire.

But I ain't of the Roman Empire dammit!!!.

Wow. All that noise just to get to this.

In the past it's always seemed that many people said that I looked like whichever "token latino actor" has currently been in vogue. They've been been in succession...

1. A. Martinez of bigtime soap opera fame. I think Santa Barbara is what he was most notorious for but also was on Days of Our Lives and I think some others too.
(some hyperenthusiastic gay guy was absolutely convinced I was him once and would not stop pestering me for an autograph. Sometimes it pays off to just tell these persistent folks that they are right and sign someone elses name just to get rid of them)

2. Lou Diamond Phillips during his Richie Valens "La Bamba" era. How much you want to bet that Lou Diamond Phillips is a stage name? Richie Valens was Ricardo Valenzuela in real life. I bet Rickie Martin is actually Ricardo Martinez.

3. Antonio Banderas - This guy is still around and probably will be for some time to come. Being one fo the few bona fide import actors directly from Spain who have struck gold in Hollywood. His debut for me was in Pedro Almodavar's classic farce Women on the Edge of a Nevrvous Breakdown.

4. Benecio Del Toro - He is currently the most In Vogue and is proabably the closest in looks to myself. But it's cerainly no dead ringer. Only a loose and "relatively in the ballpark" deal. I thought he did a great job in Traffic. My cousin is career undercover narcosquad so it was also interesting to get a veiw into that hideously ghastly world.

Hi Santa Lianna,

I never saw 21 grams. The title sounds suspiciosly dopey though. As in drug dopey but maybe that one wasn't. Antother of his that was way dopey was as Johnny Depp's/Hunter S. Thompson's drug buddy/accomplice in Terry Gilliams screen adaptation of Hunter S. Thomson's book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Most of today's new breed of actors follow the "method actor" approach where you actually do you best to really live out the type of life your character is prtraying in the film you are doing.

Thusly I suspect Benicio to have really done some of that dope. As any method actor true to his craft would.

>His debut for me was in Pedro Almodavar's classic farce Women on the Edge of a Nevrvous Breakdown.

You know, reminding me of that movie also reminds me that Antonio Banderas is actually a good actor. I have a bad habit of associating him with the Mariarchi movies which, though fun in a genuine 1970s James Bond kind of a way, aren't exactly the best vehicle in which to shine as an actor.

I really have only seen Banderas in Almodavar productions. He is in a lot of them too but you probably know that. I have this hunch that Banderas actually does his best work when being directed by Almodavar. Almost like, in that situation, he functions as an extension of Almodavars multidimensional talent.

But these days he probably does not do much work at all with Almodavar because he has way more better paying amd more glamorous opportunities in the glitz of Hollywood.

I do hope they manage to work together again in the future though. And some day I might also get around to seeing Banderas' stateside work.

PS. I bet the original low budget, film school version if Mariachi is better than the big bucks, Hollywood glam version.

Now you got me all pissed off too! I and my sort populate part of the lower mediterranean region of southern Europe, yet... I'm Greek, not Latin!

So serves you right for being called Latino!

    Lips
yeah well,

i'm a typical "ignorant American" an due to the sorry state of the education system here I'm mostly self taugght in my Euro-History.

Now,heres what I have no idea about considering that "fact" about the Roman Umpire (behind home plate)...

did the Greeks stay unconquered by the Romans during the reign of the Romans? I think I recall that back when Istanbul was called Constatinople it was indeed ruled but the Romans. That certainly does not mean that Greece was as well but Greece is sort of Sandwiched inbetween Constantinople and Rome proper so I would have my suspicions.

Oh well, gotta get myself furtherly "edumacated" on that stuff. No doubt about that. And If I'm brave enough I may have just a little Ouzo while I'm hitting up the history books.

PS. There is currently a movement to change all referneces to "latinos" and "latin americans" to "beaners" as it has been discoverd that all varieties of them do claim some alegiance to bean eating.

WOW Mom and I weren't the only freaks watching Santa Barbara?? COOL! And I remember A Martinez in that soap!

It is quite annoying that people make assumptions due to one's birthplace or heritage. Shit at least you get compared to hot actors! I get all the snarky negative stereotypes!

Anyway. Great post! I think I'm watching you
