Foreign Cuss Word of the Day

This is a new series concept I'm testing out and debuting here.

I lived in Sweden in the first half of 1995. I had a friend who I was sharing a little house with who's parents had both Finnish and Swedish roots.

He claimed that due to it's sharp staccato tones and aggresive delivery style that the Finnish language was quite excellent for the purpose of cussing.

so todays' foriegn cuss word from Finland is ..

Perkele pronounced pearrrr-kele with a hard, rolling 'r' sound like in Spanish and the 'e' vowel sounds are all of the short variety as in 'pen'

Using the rolling 'r' sound is quite mandatory with this word and if it is not rolled the authenticity of the word will be dead zero.

It is used identically and interchangably with the single and solo exclamitory usage of the word "fuck"!

This recently confirmed with a native Finn speaking blogger salasana99 who is interestingly using a dream diary concept for the basic framework of structuring his blog.

I have been practicing that Finnish cuss word. I need to learn new words and build my vocabulary.

Right! I'm thrilled about the subject.

I should add one more very common word, used espacially by young people, in the place where in English there would be "like", sort of a filling word, like when you have like something to say like but like you have to like think like what it would be like, you like use this word like; it's "vittu" (in phonetics, would it be like "vettu"??), the straight translation is "fuck", it's also possible to say "this fucking (=vitun) blah blah", so it's like "vittu ma sanoin vittu sille vitun"... and so on. Teens in a local bus speak like that. Or like in Swedish, "liksom" I think.
Per(rrrrrr)kele is used for example when someone shoots you in the leg at war or something... but it's definately more effective!

Thanks so much for your embellishment upon the modern usage of perkele

A word that probably almost never sses much action outside of the small confines of the borders of Finland.

It's also fascinating to learn of the more more subtle "fuck word equivlent" of vettu which directly interchanges functionally with the "converstional filler word" in english of "like".

But how is vittu used in a sexual or deliberately vulgar way? (ie; would you like to vittu? ) I figure it must also have that sort of an application since it is in fact a "fuck" equivalent at it's base value.

Thanks again for these further insights on these rare and fascinating Finnish cuss words and I look forward to your response to my newer 'vittu' vulgar/sexual-usage question.

Cool, I've always wanted to write about the grammatical aspects of vittu!! If one wants to fuck, it's a different word, "nussia", plus some slang words for it exist as well, such as "porata" (to screw, or "drill"; for example the large ferries between Sweden and Finland, of which one you took, are called "drilling rafts", (porauslautta), or how would it translate into English, the ones which are used for pumping oil from the sea bottom).

ANYWAY; "vittu" is used like in "oh fuck!", and "to fuck" is "nussia", and they both have about 100 different forms concerning as which part of the sentence they're used (this is what I learned in school). The official word for "fucking" is to "rakastella", but nobody uses it, it's what you would find in biology textbooks in school.
