She said YES

After finally updating y’all with my post on my talk with Julie’s father, I thought I should let you know what she had to say. As is probably no big surprise, she said yes–hence the title of this post! But let me tell you how she said yes.

I went by the hospital Sunday morning after attending church. Julie was awake and comfortable, sitting in the recliner, which is always good to see. She searched my face as I walked in the room, but I purposely tried to keep a neutral expression. I went to the sink and washed my hands, as was becoming my habit, then went to Julz and kissed her hello. I pulled up a folding chair and asked how she was doing, how she slept, what she had for breakfast and on and on. Finally she’d had enough and asked, “Well, did you speak to Pop or not? And if so, what’d he say?”

I smiled and told her not only did I speak to her father, but to four of her five brothers as well. Julie’s eyes grew wide in shock. I told her she ain’t heard nothing yet! I recounted the list of questions they had, and how they recorded each response, explaining it took nearly an hour for them to get through the list. Then I told her how Judy entertained me while the men went to determine my fate, and how they made us wait for over an hour.

Julie was alternately amused and annoyed with her family as I relayed the prior evening’s events, either laughing out loud or covering her mouth with her hands in disbelief. She said she would have given anything to be a fly on the wall for that, and especially during the deliberations! I tried to give her the look Judy gave the guys last night but she laughed and said I wasn’t even close.

When she finally finished laughing at me, I asked her, “So what do you say?”

Her reply was classic Julz, “To what? I haven’t heard a proper question since you walked into this room!”

It occurred to me that she was right–-I hadn’t asked her again, this time with her father’s permission and blessing. I reached around her chair to the night stand drawer and pulled out the rose with the ring that I had returned there. I came back in front of her chair, got down on one knee, held the rose and just looked at her for a moment. I thought about the words I’d said last night. I thought about the questions her father and brothers had asked me. And I knew I couldn’t reuse what I’d said last night. Her eyes were already brimming with tears. Just then inspiration hit me: I borrowed a line from the movie Runaway Bride.

“I guarantee you that we'll have some tough times. I guarantee you that at some point one, or the other, or both of us, will want to get out. But I also guarantee you that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Because I know in my heart of hearts, you're the only one for me. Julie Keilana, will you marry me?”

The tears spilled over and rolled down her cheeks as she started nodding yes. She kissed my cheek as she hugged me around the neck and said, “Yes. YES! YES I will marry you!” I held her and kissed her–-her cheeks, her eyes, her lips and all over her bald head. She untied the ring from the rose, placed it on her finger and smiled at me. She’d never looked more beautiful.
