Which do you strive for?

I was off reading blogs last night and ran across a blog written by tootsiedippin. In the entry I read they were talking about Excellence vs Perfection. There are some folks I know who are perfectionist and some folks I know who are excellent at what they do. This post shed some new light on the subject for me.

Excellence is willing to be wrong.
Perfection is being right.

I am always willing to be wrong about things and others because I know I am far from perfect myself and make errors in judgment all the time.
Perfectionist seem to always wanna be right at all cost to them and others around them.

Excellence is risk
Perfection is fear

I have taken my share of risk in the past and have grown as a person as a result regardless of whether it was a good thing and/or relationship I was taking a risk with.
People who are perfectionist are sometimes so afraid to try new and different experiences that they often miss out on moments of growth in their lives and wonder why it is stagnent.

Excellence is powerful
Perfection is anger and frustration.

Not much to add here except it is true. Some of the most powerful people on this planet are excellent at what they do.

Excellence is spontaneous
Perfection is control

How true this is. A perfectionist always has to feel in control of his or her's environment and losing control to them is not acceptable. A spontaneous person goes thru life accepting victories and admitting defeat and then learning from both.

Excellence is accepting
Perfection is judgment

This statement is so true particularly in the realm of human relationships. Sure we all want the "perfect" partner for ourselves. But if we realize perfection in others is impossible to find then we can be more accepting and tolerant of others whether they are "perfect" for us or not.

Excellence is giving
Perfection is taking

Examples of this are Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and other famous people who give back to society thru chartiable works. And to other less famous people who volunteer for organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Big Brother/Big Sister organizations and countless other organizations. For these people know that it is in the giving that you receive the most benefit.

Excellence is confidence
Perfection is doubt

Perfectionist are always striving to build a better mouse trap so to speak. People who are striving for excellence know that things work out in the end regardless. Perfectionist can't focus on the grey areas because for them it is all or nothing.

Excellence is flowing
Perfection is pressure

Ever notice how water runs freely in a sink with no stopper. But if you put the stopper in the pressure in the sink makes the water rise and overflow from the pressure? Think about it. People who are striving for excellence know that that just like the water running freely in the sink life has it's ebbs and flows. Perfectionist always feel pressured into performing and can't accept setbacks. People who are perfectionist tend to also have high blood pressure and other ailments because they refuse to go with the flow.

Excellence is journey
Perfection is destination

Ever notice that you seem to remember clearly the events that happened on your way to somewhere but can't seem to recall what happened after you arrived at your destination?? That's because life was meant to be a journey and not a destination.

So I ask what are you striving for? Personally for me from this day forward I will just strive for excellence. Perfection is boring and unattainable.

Me - I'm striving for happiness.

Perfection is attainable - but usually at a cost - to hearts, minds or wallets.

I would have to go for excellence based on this discription. I'd be happy just to feel like I do a little better every day at whatever it is. Nice post.
