I am going to visit my mum next week......

And she is promising to cook all my "favourite" meals. What is worse is that I am going to go to my sister's house next weekend too. And if it is possible, she is a worse cook than my mother. And both are very protective of their kitchens so I don't get the "opportunity" to cook a meal for them.

I will end up eating rissoles, baked beans on toast, egg and chips, and who knows what else. There will be no roast pork, or beef, no steak and kidney pie or pork pie, no scotch eggs (the good english home made meals): there will be my mum's cooking instead.

Hopefully my daughter and I can sneak off to a good Chinese or Indian restaurant when we are down in Southern California.

LOL! i know what you mean, my mother is not a great cook either (fortunately my sister has improved and takes advice from me these days) -- but must confess to loving eggs, chips and beans (just about the only thing that is still british in me...)

My mother used to take canned spaghetti, chopped onions, browned ground beef, mix it all together and call it Hungarian Goulash

Freelove, I hope you also put lots of HP sauce on your egg and chips. That is really great stuff and I always have a bottle on hand for any french fries or eggs that I cook.

Redmartinigirl, My daughter and I are going to surprise the folks by fixing salmon cakes and roasted potatoes while we are down there. My mum should be able to handle that.

Jay, that sounds like my mum's recipe for her "tomato sauce" - one level below ragu. Perhaps I need to post the recipe for baked beans on toast - please n.ote how edible and satisfying the picture looks

papy, when my granny cooked these, they were fantastic.

But my mum dries out the beef, burns the tops of the yorshire puds and cooks the veggies so long they go into irretrievable meltdown mode.
