total bust...

well, elephant camp was NOT what I had anticipated it being...... I was there to learn elephant behavior in order to learn how to read them...ultimately to be able to phot them in the wild safely. NOT what I got.... more like slave labor...putting in 14 hr. days, shoveled a LOT of shit, feeding, pitching hay, etc. All the farm type labor around it, but nothing what I was after. Don't get me wrong, I did learn some, but not what my sole intent was. So, I am back at home, swollen, beaten up, covered in hives (I'm allergic to hay!)and trying to recover. I was able to get some shots in, but not many..... my day started at about 5:15a, and we came crawling in around 7:30-8pm. did this 6 nights a week. One day off in order to try to get laundry and grocery shopping done. Yes, I'm bummed. Oh well, it's a live and learn thing. Part of being bummed is that this is NOT what they advertised, plus I was very up front about what I was looking for. I don't think they even read my application as they were so suprised when I brought up my lupus (it's on the application!) So, there we have it. Oh well...... I did met some very neat people while there, so I am thankful for that. so, will be home the rest of the week, then head back to the office a week from Monday. One of the few times I must admit my lupus got the better of me. Heat about kicked my ass!! It was 99-102 degrees, add to that the "feels like" index, and we all were out in approximately 115 degree weather all day. Some days I was at the top of a hay stack, so add 10 degrees to that as well. Got a bit toasty up there! So, there you have it....all that hype for nothing! did manage to get a few decent shots in while I was there, so won't complain a whole lot..my hands and feet may differ with that, though!.........E.

Well, I can honestly say it was educational....mostly in farm labor, but educational!! Like I mentioned, I met some great people, so all was not lost! Thanks for the well wishes............E.

Eros:
Too bad camp didn't turn out like you had hoped. Sounds more like you were a working hand on Animal Farm rather than a visitor to an Elephant Preserve. Bad timing with the heat, but at least you got out of there relatively unscathed. Good thing you have a week to recover. Not exactly the photo safari you were hoping for on the early posts.
Interested to see where your muse takes you next.
