NHL player...Broken Neck

Last night (Jan 31, 2006) an NHL player broke his neck while crashing into the boards.

The player, Kevin Colley, broke his 5th cervical bone in his neck. He plays for the NY Islanders, and they were playing the Washington Capitals.
He skated off the ice on his own and shows no signs of paralysis.

As a Canadian boy myself that loved and played hockey (still do), I too broke my neck playing hockey. I was 15 years old at the time. I was checked from behind and ran into the boards, the back of my head hitting the back of my back. I too skated of the ice on my own.

I was lucky that I have no serious effects from my accident...and from that accident I am more humble and appreciative of what I have and the things around me.

I know this is an adult site, but seeing this on the sports highlight last night, I wanted to share this with you.

Take care

I recently saw the "Travis Roy" story. I was in New england when it happened. Here is an excerpt of press coverage from about a week afterward:

Travis Roy's injury puts sports world in perspectiveIt was an innocent enough looking hit. The same kind of check that is
thrown dozens of times in every hockey game, every day.
The hit was nothing unusual for a game like last Friday's between North Dakota and Boston.

North Dakota's Mitch Vig grabbed the puck behind his own net and shot it around the boards. As Vig unloaded the puck, he was hit by Terrier freshman Travis Roy.

Then the innocence was lost.

Roy lost his balance and went crashing into the boards, head first.

His body went limp, falling to the ice like a sandbag.

In his first shift of his first college hockey game, Travis Roy had broken his neck. It was the kind of play that Roy had been part of hundreds of times before, but this time, instead of jarring an opponent, he came out of it with a fractured fourth vertebrae and paralysis from the neck down.

As he lay on the ice, Roy told his father that he knew he was in trouble; he told him he couldn't move.

You are lucky .. an dlucky that sleeks likes you so much .... dayum !
