7 days until

August 05, 2005 18:31 IST

A Russian naval mini-submarine with seven sailors aboard was on Friday trapped on the sea floor off the Pacific Coast after getting caught on a fishing net, navy officials said.

How long the oxygen aboard would last was unclear as Navy authorities scrambled to try to figure out how to raise the vessel from a depth of some 190 mt.

Navy spokesman Capt Igor Dygalo said the United States Navy has been asked for assistance, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported. There were no immediate details on what kind of help the US could provide.

In televised comments, Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt Alexander Kosolapov said there was contact with the sailors, who were not hurt, and that authorities were preparing to send down a similar vessel to assess the situation.

The vessel was trapped after its propeller caught on a fishnet on Thursday, Dygalo said.

The vessel was too deep to allow the sailors to swim to the surface on their own, officials said, and conflicting statements from officials indicated there was enough oxygen in the vessel to last between one and five days.

The Interfax news agency quoted Pacific Fleet commander Adm Viktor Dmitriev as saying the vessel had enough oxygen and electrical power to last 48 hours.

It also quoted an unidentified high-level navy general staff official as saying that with a crew of seven, oxygen aboard the vessel would only last two days after its launch.

Meanwhile, at Moscow's request, Japan dispatched four naval vessels on Friday to help in the rescue of the submarine snagged on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, but the ships aren't expected to arrive at the scene until early next week.

The ships include one submarine tender and three minesweepers, Marine Self Defense Force spokesman Hidetsubu Iwamasa said.

........Now my question friends, Can you guess why the Navy had the net THAT DEEP and that WIDE ?....what do you suppose they were trying to catch..large seamonkeys ? Did they finally hear about the "fish called Wanda?... Or do you suppose Tom Hank's 1984 movie "splash" finally sank in and they are after a talking fish ? OR...something illeagle...there is allot that isUnclear as the article shows...What were they trying to catch , tell me bloggers!

They caught exactly what they wanted to! If the fishing nets did indeed belong to the Navy then they were either searching for Godzilla, The Lochness Monster or Spies!

Personally I'd rather see Godzilla get caught because he should pay for all the damage he's caused!
Stay well, One love and God bless!

Excellent report.
Why indeed would you have a net at 600 feet. Is this what they call DEEP SEA FISHING? You have not mentioned the other strange thing, under sea communication aereals. I thought it was impossible to transmit through water at great depth. Have the Russians conquered what the US Navy could not? Well the GOOD NEWS is that all the crew of the Submarine have been rescued safely. Final point not that I would gloat, but being as I am British, I feel we should make a small mention of the fact. THE GOOD OLD BRITISH ROYAL NAVY. HOORAY! HOORAY! HOORAY! IT took Our Rescue Mini Sub to get them cut free and safely to the surface.
Sorry yanks I am just rather Patriotic. I keep telling Americans to rename their language as AMERICANEES and not ENGLISH. If King George had sent reinforcements, you would all still be a Coloney of GREAT BRITIAN. Never mind I do love you America, and yes I have visited 6 times in my earlier years. keep on Blogging.
