I'm directing a stage play

I got a job directing a gay romantic sex comedy in Los Angeles. This evening we had our third rehearsal.

I'm having a lot of fun. Everyone involved is really nice (such an overused word, but it fits) and the rehearsals are going smoothly. The producers are so on-the-ball that all I have to do is direct -- not promote, not build scenery, not hire a run crew or box office person, nothing! It's heaven!

I'm getting to know everyone and I like them a lot. I usually tend to admire gay men because so many of them have survived incredible adversity in their lives and have emerged not only with their dignity intact but also their sense of humor. Perhaps that's just as unfair as negatively stereotyping an entire group of people, but please indulge me this once.

The producers know I'm straight but I'm not sure whether they've told the cast that or not. I don't mind one way or the other; I just want the cast to be comfortable around me.

This evening, for example, one of the producers started telling me a story about how he'd finally discovered where all the hot guys are hanging out at his job and then he said, "Oh, you probably wouldn't be interested in hearing about that!"

I responded, "Hey, I always like knowing people are getting laid, no matter who they are." I think that put him at ease.

One of my best friends from high school is gay and he introduced me to a whole world of new people. It is probably because of him that I feel so comfortable in that world now.

One thing that bugs me: All the men in the cast have almost completely flat stomachs! God, talk about intimidating!!

More news as it happens. If you're in L.A. and you'd like to see the show, let me know and I'll e-mail you info about it.
