They make me laugh, these little smilies on AdultFriendFinder. I mean, AdultFriendFinder can't make the blogs work without massive delays, occasional lost blogs (often not that occasional), glitches all over the place ... but what they can do is make sure we've got lots of lovely smilies to play with.

Are they a form of Prozac for bloggers, do you think? Can anyone resist their lure when posting? Has anyone ever read a post (including comments) which is smiley-free?

Nah, of course not.

But, I have some questions to ask you:

Would someone please explain to me what this smiley is supposed to be all about. To me it looks like a boy scout experiment to light a fire with a duck's arse. And I don't mean the hairstyle.

And the point of this one is what, exactly? Seems to me it usually only crops up when people are trying to close parentheses and slip up a bit in their typing.

o-o This one annoys me, because it means any word with this letter combination in the middle gets screwed up. The number of times I have seen no-one. And I really object (in my endless editing perfection quest) to having to go back and change it to no- one, just to escape the dreaded cuffs. Not that cuffs are necessarily something you want to escape from, you understand. It all depends on the context..

Is it just me, or does this smiley = funintheday2006 to everyone? I don't know if it is just because he over uses it, or whether I think that inane grin somehow resembles his face, but the two are inextricably linked in my book. Hint: if you want to be my friend, avoid using . It makes me look like this

On the same lines, is this one a smiley representation of maverick1255? It always makes me think of him. This one, you can use as much as you like. It makes me look like this

And finally, do you use the smilies? Do you have a favoured few whose codes you know without having to look them up, or do you always check them?

In writing this, I checked them out of course, and now I think I might change from my default for a cheeky little smile to . Seems to reflect my naughty gene a little bit better.

The first is ROFLMAO "rolling on the floor laughing my ass off. It looks better on yahoo where it's animated and you can tell the figure is laughing. The next is loser, it resembles the L sign some young people use to designate this. I only use them when IMing my sweet baby. Judging by this post, you seem to use them even if the offend you. Oh, well, you're entitled!

Hey, Mike, I'm a woman. I'm entitled to change my mind as often as my knickers

CB_2 replies on 9/12/2006 2:42 pm:
I see, so the boy scout duck is ROFLMAO (which is the acronym I usually use). OK, can't exactly see why, but there you go...

And I would never call someone a loser! Except, as you say, in affectionate private communication. Must remember to avoid that one.

I can see where wouldn't be as obvious if the animation isn't working... to me, it's particularly expressive--the guy has fallen on the ground he's laughing so hard, and his stamping his feet and the ground so hard is the laughter overcoming him... (used as a symbol to say "aren't I funny" if I'm not sure that people get that I'm not being serious, or to say that whatever you said really cracked me up...)

I do have a small number of them I use regularly, that I don't have to look up, and another few that I have to look up every time I want to use them....

and I absolutely agree with you about oo also

Do you know I have only just realised it is supposed to be a face lying on its side. To me, it looks like a duck with a pair or tubes moving up and down at its arse!

This is Fun's

I like this one

This one is just cool

This one makes me laugh

This one is Micheal Jackson

Just a few.....

CB_2 replies on 9/13/2006 1:15 am:
I realise Fun also uses but that one doesn't have the same effect on my blood pressure as the other one does. Isn't that weird?!

Where are all these extra smilies coming from? I click on the blue link marked Smiley Key and they are not in there. Is there another list of smilies somewhere, or is this something only The Initiated know?

boy scout experiment! that's good!

Yep... I like to use them, mostly in my replies though... and sometimes on my posts; they tend to reflect my mood at the time better than the "mood" box we can pick from. There's a few I can type the code for without opening the box, like this one
and this
even this
and of course this
and even one of these for my Special Friends {=}

I rarely use this one because that's when I'm sad about something, and since sad is a serious thing and a smiley is a silly thing, it seems kinda dumb to use it!

This one is when I'm making fun of a sad situation in my life.

and this one (hang on a second while I open the cheat box!) and as promised from my comment in your post above

means, for that case, "My arse is exit only!"

And now that I'm at the end of my comment here, I can put this one for you, because you're a Special Friend {=} !

CB_2 replies on 9/14/2006 4:15 am:
Oh Todd, if only you'd let me show you what else your arse could be used for

And {=} back to you.

You should see the Yahoo IM version of that looks as if he's wanking! I was a bit disappointed that the ROFLMAO smiley here was simply pummelling the ground!

I quite like smileys. They're kinda cute! But I rarely use them in posts ..... only comments and IM.

warm xx

CB_2 replies on 9/18/2006 1:23 am:
It's entirely possible that the above is the only post of mine in which smilies appear. I feel they can be a bit distracting. But in comments and IM they are fun. With my cyber-fuck buddy, there is a lot of going on.
