Oh, to be a Child again.

This week I have been helping with the crafts for Vacation Bible School at our church. I really enjoy working with children. They are so eager to listen and learn and the majority of them are well behaved.

There is one girl, named Mandy who has been coming to our Vacation Bible School every year for the past three years. Being a retired teacher I knew with in 5 minutes of meeting her that she had "Learning Problems". Mandy also had very poor social skills and would get lost going from room to room or upset that it was time to change activities. So, since that first very difficult year, Mandy became my special "buddy" and I went every where with her. Because of my daughter's wedding this year I decided not to be a teacher but to be a helper, and so I was not with her when she moved up to the Third grade class. I wondered, and worried about Mandy. I sneaked down to the third grade class room and peeked in the window, and surprise, surprise. Mandy was doing ok. I talked to her teacher at the end of the first day and she said Mandy asked for me but was not upset when told I was working in the crafts room. Mandy's teacher also said she was doing o.k. but still got upset occasionally. I asked the teacher to come and get me if she couldn't calm Mandy down. But,so far there has been no need for that.

When Mandy comes into the craft room every day a BIG ole' smile lights up her face and she comes running over to hug me. She has to sit at my table and for that 45 minute time period she wants all my attention. I don't mind and neither do the other students or teachers. I get a Mandy hug every day and she waves hi to me when she sees me in the building.

I am so proud of how Mandy has grown and changed. She still has and will always have a lag in her social and academic development. But, her "child like" joy in everything and her willingness to try makes her so pleasant to be around. I hope she never completely looses her "child like" attitude.

So, for Mandy, I have written this poem...

Oh, to be a child again

Playing make believe

climbing trees

jumping rope and riding a bike

asking questions

learning

getting elbows and knees

scraped

rather than hearts and dreams

*hugs back Chelle. It was either I become Mandy's "buddy" or she go home. I wanted her to experience Vacation Bible School. I feel like I have gotten more more out of our friendship then Mandy has.

Lovely, Buttery, it's fantastic when you just 'connect' with a child like that!
