Who Are We REALLY?

Did you ever say something like, “I must have been out of my mind to do that!” Or, “I didn’t know what I was thinking.” Who is the first “I” and who is the second?

I heard Baba Ram Dass talk about this years ago in Boulder. Who are we, really? Think of levels of your existence like channels on a TV for a minute. They are all transmitting, all the time. But what are we tuned in to? It went something like this.

Channel 1: Physical body.
You wash it, comb it, feed it, water it, schlep it around. It’s sensual. You can see, hear, touch, smell and taste it. It is in space and in time. It had a beginning when you were born, and it will have an end when you die. It hurts and it feels good. We want it to look pretty so other people will touch it. It’s real, right? We can measure it and treat it and try to extend it. But it’s gonna go eventually.

Channel 2: Psycho/social/emotional/intellectual body/mind.
Your thoughts, feelings, emotions. Dreams. Social status. Intellect. Degrees, social security numbers, bank accounts. Roles you play in life. “Hello, I’m a lawyer. Hello, I’m a prostitute.” It is in TIME, but not in space. Your thought or feeling or dream has a beginning and an end, but does not occupy a space. You can’t put your depression and elation in a box and carry them around like a dog, but they are there just the same. It’s real, right? Although we can’t measure a feeling or a dream scientifically, we know all this is there. It is experiential, yet not physical.

Most people would say this is it. I am my body and my mind, and if you can’t prove it or measure it, then it doesn’t exist. I happen to know that is a very na├»ve way to look at yourself, but most of us do. For example, electricity existed before it was discovered, but we didn’t have the tools to measure it. Yet it was there all along. Just like our ability to heal ourselves and others. Or to communicate without words.

Channel 3: The part of you that is not channels 1 or 2.
Have you ever noticed that there is a part of you that is just “there?” It isn’t doing anything, it’s just there. The silent observer. It was there when you were a kid, a teenager, a young adult. It’s there now. It has never changed as your body and mind have done. It was there before you came into your body, and it will be there after your body dies. As you are reading this, just turn your attention to the one who is doing the reading. Who is that? You have a thought, but who is the thinker of the thought? It is not your brain. Your brain is the exquisite executor of the thought, but your brain is not the thought. Where did the thought come from?

Your channel 3 doesn’t have a name. “Soul” isn’t it, but call it that if you’d like. Poets try to describe it and some like Rumi or Tagore make a pretty good effort. But there are no words for it.

Channel 4: The One.
Everyone’s channel 3’s are connected to channel 4, the One. If you can quiet down your channels 1 and 2 enough to connect with your channel 3, you will sometimes get a glimpse of channel 4. That’s what meditation is all about. Poets also try to describe it, but it isn’t describable with words. “God?” Well okay, call it God if you want. I have caught a glimpse of channel 4 during long meditation sessions, and in Nature, and in little children’s eyes, when I am tuned out of the hubbub of channels 1 and 2. I can’t describe “it” either, other than to say it feels like pure bliss. Connectedness. Peace. LOVE. No worries or problems or separations. Total unity. I came away totally changed that day and will never be the same again. I can’t take life as seriously after an experience like that.

So, what does all this have to do with SEX?

Channel 1 sex: Fucking. Masturbating. Blow up dolls. One night stands. Purely physical.

Channel 2 sex: Channel 1 sex plus feelings and caring and tenderness and emotion.

Channel 3 sex: humboldthonni described it. Check it out this amazing woman’s description of channel 3 sex: [post 317659]

I'm noticing the silent observer more and more these days. Exactly like when I was a child. Nicely put. Channel 4 connectedness is my oneness with nature. Always vaguely cognizent of its existence, but not realizing I could consciously tap it until quite recently.

I see many living or living for Channel 1 sex. And I have in my past far too many times. Not that there's anything wrong with fucking per se. And masturbation is essential. But now I always want that deeper connection with and act so beautiful between two people.

Awesome post! Thanks for putting this one out there, G.

Thanks Rosa, I appreciate your taking the time to read it.

I don't have an issue with sex on any channel. I know lots of people say they don't want to bother unless they have the real connection, and that's cool. I think it's all good...

BF Really cool thoughts.
Saying been there done that is cliche I know...yet we all have been there but not put alot of it into words.
Levels one and two are anywhere and everywhere...

Still hoping to get to level three again someday...with a human.
I know what I prefere... and will find again someday..;but... meanwhile...the occcsional other levels will have to do......

Level 4? I've had times when I was so overcome with the Spiritual that I thought.. this is actually better than drugs or even sex...
I was nearly in euphoria....such an awsome experience..

Is this is where sexual Tantra can be sort of a parallel to level 4?Hoping for that even more someday.
Hugs and spiritual kisses

Thanks for this Lily! I think sexual tantra can be at level 4. The merging of the two with the one. So beautiful. A shame we can't get out of our karmic predicaments long enough to feel it. xoxo
