Ten Things I Love About California

Well, it’s been almost two months since I semi-moved from Colorado to Sacramento, in the great state of California. And, it’s been the same amount of time since I’ve written anything outside the job ‒ no journals or short stories or poetry or anything. Now that I’m settled, I wanna see if I can reconnect with my old blog buddies and get back in the groove of writing again. Of course, the best way to do that is to bop into your blogs, so look for me there soon if you read this.

I did live in the LA area for a few years in the 80’s, and in San Jose for six months before going to Saudi in ’84, so I have had a taste of the place. I moved away because I was having kids (well my ex was LOL ), and we didn’t wanna pay ¾ of my salary every month to live in a little ole shack. Guess what? Things haven’t changed that much in that regard.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with California. But rather than focus too much on the things I hate, here are ten things I love about California:

1. People Diversity: There are so many people, from everywhere. I love meeting them and learning about them.

2. Weather Diversity: Want Mediterranean? Go to the southwest. Want mountains and snow? Go to the west. Want heat? Go to the desert. Want fog? San Francisco baby! Want temperate? Go to northern California. And so on and so forth.

3. Food Diversity: New Yorkers, you think you’re all that with the food? You ain’t got jack on California. The San Joaquin Valley could feed half the planet. Everything is fresh, everywhere. The cities have every kind of cuisine imaginable to man. I love the Farmer’s Markets, which are everywhere. And the avocados.. Yum!

4. Wine Country: France, you think you’re all that with the wine? Non! Miles and miles and miles of vineyards, and every wine you could ever learn about. I don’t know jack about wine, but I do know I could fill my cellar with stuff that I love for under $10 a bottle. And the trips to wine country are SO fun. What I remember anyway.

5. The Beaches: So many, so long, so diverse. Party beaches, romantic beaches, rocky beaches. Hot beaches and cold beaches. Big Sur, awesome.

6. The Mountains: Colorado being home, I can really appreciate mountains. California has the Sierras, which are just like the Rockies. They also have the Coast Range, which are like the Appalachians in a way (geographically anyway). So much hiking and biking, so little time.

7. The Opportunities: Every industry known to man exists in one way or another in California. From high tech to building planes to agriculture to tourism to Hollywood, you can find some way to make a living, regardless of your training or background. You may not be able to afford a place to live, but what the hell, gotta start somewhere.

8. The Government actually does something: What, you say? Well yeah, of governments everywhere, this state actually gives a shit about the environment and preserving it. The first state to require unleaded gas. The first state to mandate eventual zero emissions. Vast state parks and biking trails and preservations, everywhere. Other states follow California’s lead.

9. The Weed: The best in the world, grown in the Emerald Triangle. Even Amsterdam can’t hold a candle.

10. And, the saving the best for last ‒ the Women: Gorgeous, sexy, beautiful. Plastic and hippie. Down to earth and bitchy. Tanned, shaved, stylish. Kind and gentle, wild and crazy, full of life and living it. And millions of them, in every shape size and color. Gotta love it.

Why would someone want fog, well besides Jack the Ripper types?

Nice, G. Glad you're back.
Been there a few times but never long enough to really explore. Sounds like your're settling in and enjoying the place. Especially all those women. And you're gonna send some back here for me?

Don't forget the sunscreen...

Hey there, this is my first visit to your blog......I have to agree on # 1 through 7, on #8 I don't talk politics, it's too explosive now days. On #9 I can't handle that stuff anymore, not since I was 23 or 24........but on number 10 I DEFINATELY AGREE........I am California born and raised, I'm kind, loving, crazy, bitchy and not afraid to say so, sometimes hippie, just loving life and just wanting to be me......you have a beautiful smile
