Appreciating Whatcha Got: A Conversation with My Daughter Tonight

My cell phone rings. It’s my oldest. “Hey dad whatcha doin’?”

Me: “Just relaxing, doing some reading. You?”

1stborn: “Just driving home from work. Dad, I gotta tell ya something totally weird!”

Me: “Okay, what?”

1stborn: “Okay. I stopped to get gas right? Well I was pissed ‘cause it rained and I just washed my effin car! So I was telling that to the clerk at the gas station. She said, ‘Well at least you have a nice car, mine’s always breaking down! I was lucky to get here today! Gonna cost $750 to get the shit fixed, whatever the hell it is.”

Me: “Ha ha! So the lesson is, appreciate your car.”

1stborn: “No wait! So, after she said that, there was this other girl in the store who was listening to all this. She said, “Well at least you have a car! I have to take the goddamn bus everywhere.”

1stborn: “THEN! I’m not kidding daddy! This guy in a wheelchair was came up the aisle and said, “Be happy you can walk young lady!”

Me, laughing my ass off: “Wow, that is bizarre! Hell, did a guy with an arm missing come in and tell the guy in the wheelchair how lucky he was to have arms?”

1stborn: “Ha ha! No, but what the hell, may as well have!”

I shit you not, this happened today. I do need to work on appreciating more.

Ah, Sychronicity, the secret mistress of Probability. Her goal in life is to make us go "Wha?" and cause even the most naturalistic among us to ponder whether there really could be deeper connections.

It's an amazing story. I like to think the guy in the wheelchair is also telling the same story and bellylaughing.

Yeah. Ever heard the saying, "there's no such thing as a coincidence?" I believe that. Everything is a lesson. We just have to pay attention.

Exactly. Sometimes we're watching and sometimes we're not. And at least for me, if I don't get the lesson the first few times, the Universe bitch-slaps me hard. OUch...

My Grandma made a point of always reminding me that there are those who are more fortunate than you and less fortunate than you. No matter what you don't think you don't have, always take the time to appreciate what you do have. Sage advice. This story is a good remeinder for all of us.
And it sounds like you have a great relationship with your daughter!

Yeah grandparents carry around a lot of wisdom huh. I miss mine. And yeah, my daughter and I get along great. She actually listens once in awhile these days, imagine that!
