Summer skills- The Spike

Welcome to volleyball class 101.The womens class is straight after, so I am sure you all want to practise hard.

Imagine the scene:its game point, the ball comes in your direction, its laid up by the bronzed life guard type beside you.You jump high soaring through the air.The tanned admiring beach crowd gasp as you swing your arm...............and then groan as you miss the ball and collide with the net.

Well no longer ladies and gents for today we learn how to spike.I hope you have brought knee protection.

You want to stand three paces back from the net, anticipating where the ball is going so you can intercept it with the palm of your hand.

Visualise that point and explode to it with your first step, raising both hands in front of your torso.Take two small steps while swinging your arms over and above you like a pendulum.

Draw your right hand behind your head as you rise, so your open palm faces the sky like a waiter carrying a tray.Track the ball with your left hand as you are lining it up.

Hammer the ball with your open hand, snapping the wrist and swivelling your hips for maximum topspin and velocity.Hit the ball forward and down as much as you can, so the opposition has no time to react.

Then retire to the beach bar with the admiring onlookers.Easy.

Okay, I love to play volleyball (don't get to much anymore), but my arms and wrists hurt so bad after playing - any tips for that?

pussinboots. It does depend on the type of ache. Is it from the actual wrist joint or from the muscles? My father swears by Glucosamine to ease the joints, and wrist/arm supports always help. Its also worth strenghtening the arm by doing light weights with high reps to even out any muscular imbalances you may have. For a more medical viewpoint I am sure Apolybear has some advice.

Myself, with injuries I take the sportsman approach ie a large icepack and plenty of deepheat followed by inebriation to numb the pain.

ahhh yes, net sports... LOVE the volleyball...LOVE the tennis... wrist snap is the so many things in life!

Puss.. a little ice after playing and Aleve (double dose) for a couple days will have you feeling better. Sounds like you may have stressed your tendons (helps to stretch before you play)...

Enjoy the courts!

Dz its your choice but its all action on this court.Did I mention we were playing mixed nudist volleyball. We are continuing my naturism theme.
