Aaah...neighbourly love!

So, my dog is being walked, minding his own business, when suddenly, from out of the blue, this mutt comes and chomps down on the back of his neck. Because of my dog's gentle nature, he thinks the dog is playing, and wags his tail for a moment, then realizes: "Holy shit, this dog wants to kill me."

Although the dog is bigger and younger, my dog roundly pins him down, when someone comes and separates the two (for those who don't know, never get into a dogfight without a broom or something).

So, my second reaction is to find out where this dog lives and inform the owner (my first reaction was to kill the thing). I find the owner. Inform him. No apologies, no explanation. He tell's me, "He's in the cage now" and "thanks for letting me know." I continue to inform him of the risks (i.e. a child walking the dog may try to get involved and get bitten; why is there a dog running about the neigbourhood attacking things anyway?) and he says the same thing again. Like a robot. I tell him that I'm coming here as a courtesy, as most people would simply call the pound. Robot-man reiterates his position. He's obviously bothered by my coming and bothering him.

Meanwhile, my dog's neck swells and he can't lift his head. He's a purebred, show dog quality (Best in Show in his younger days). $150 later at the vets to get some metacam to help relax his muscles, and I'm ready to put a burning bag of shit on this guy's doorstep. Maybe I'll set his dog on fire while I'm at it.

I'd make him pay the vet bill. Whoever seperated the dogs would realize that it was his dog that bit yours.

Cute puppy!! (They're all puppies to me until they hit about 80 lbs.)

Thanks...we'll give him the vet bill. Unfortunately I doubt he'll pay, and I'm just not litigious enough to take him to court.

Another thought came to mind that he may put the dog down if we give him the bill. Although the thing pisses me off, I really don't like dogs being put down, especially when this fella' has kids who probably love the mongrel.

But on the other hand, I met a lady on the dog walk (who was walking her dog also) and she said the mongrel attacked her dog three times. This one's a or no, the dog's going to the pound if it attacks mine again.

hhhmmm...the dog has attacked at least 3 times and they still keep it around their kids...this is a mental giant you seem to be dealing with.

An unfortunate matchup, speaking as a mental midget

so the police/humane society won't get involved???? This dog sounds scary. (and your pup is absolutely adorable)

Well, I'm trying to be neighbourly about it rather than reactionary. Perhaps I'm just making a welcome mat of myself?

That is the cutest puppy I've ever seen. And I'm very sorry about all that happening- I think you and the other dogowners need to join forces so that your dogs remain safe. The authorities generally only do things after the fact.
