Upgrades in Message Center

After sending out my personal newsletter, I received almost two thousand emails. I've replied to almost half of them but discovered that the message center had room for improvement. Ok, I knew it was slow but when you have lots of emails, it was worse.

The good news is that it's MUCH faster now. About 10x faster to show the message categories - which now also show two new categories for messages with flowers (did you know you earn 25 points for each message with flowers that you read?) and for gold members. We made the message show up INSTANTLY when you click on the left side list. We've also added a sort button so you can easily get to the oldest unread message - useful if you get a lot of messages and want to respond to the oldest one first. There are now icons to show which messages are from people in your hotlist or from friends. Finally, we put a "spam" button on the upper right-hand side so you can help us weed out inappropriate members faster (clicking on that button puts the member in a special review queue).

Let me know if you would like to see other upgrades to the Message Center. We have about 10 other projects related to improving speed and functionality of the site - but your feedback always helps us prioritize efforts. Thanks!

Andrew, I know you are doing your best, but you also know my thoughts and many others on this. The new message center is horrible, we want an EMAIL SYSTEM not a chat type system. There are no real folders, although the labels are kinda better, but with no folders at all it is just not an email system. There is no subject line, there is no trash folder, EVERYTHING is saved whether you want it or not. In the old message center one could actually save the messages they wanted to and put them in a folder and go to it when they wanted and it didn't clog up things. Some women I know actually wrote in their profiles that when someone contacted them to put 'xxxx' (fill in that blank) in the subject line so they knew that the person had READ their profile. It made it so much easier to weed out crap with that subject line. If you hit delete it is gone, no trash folder, just GONE. If you make a mistake too bad. This is not cool. PLEASE... can you think of how to integrate this back to a real email system not a chat version??

Andrew replies on 5/9/2014 7:11 am:
While realizing that the buck stops with me, the Message Center is something that was done before I came back last December. As the software is really complex, my goal is to incrementally improve it to have the features member need.

The next projects will include 1) "Trash Folder" which will keep deleted messages for 24 hours, 2) message level "Favorite" stars that let you mark which message you never want to have deleted.

I think that members could still start their message with "xxx" and women can see that in the message listing on the left side.

Well Andrew, if you've replied to the best part of 1,000 emails from people on here I tip my hat to you. As for the new message center, I wasn't a fan of the change to start with, but it's grown on me.

Now if only you hadn't Americanized it and called it centre instead of center, I wouldn't be seeing two spellchecks in this comment

I want to add that there is no way to change settings on the emails either. You cannot turn off JUST the emails so your profile is on and your blogs and the emails are off any longer. I also cannot set the emails to match the cupid settings like we used to in the original message center. If someone doesn't want emails from say people out of 500 miles, married/not married, age limits of more than or less than something, out of state, all cupid setting things.. we cannot do that any longer. Some of us don't want the constant influx of messages from people that we really are NOT looking to meet.

Andrew replies on 5/9/2014 7:20 am:
I'm going to suggest that we default women (and perhaps couples) to "Important" message filter. This will require members to change the default dropdown to see emails from people outside their cupid settings. The system should also remember the dropdown so users don't need to change it each time they go there.

I frequently get lockups on this site. If I'm broadcasting and have several members video windows open, it frequently causes everything to stop. Once it even locked up my whole computer to where I had to do a hard shutdown. I've spoken with Dell tech support and they say there's nothing wrong with my video adapters or Flashplayer and assume that it's site specific. I get the same issue whether I use IE9 or Firefox. Are others having this problem?

Andrew replies on 5/9/2014 7:24 am:
I have been told that there is yet another upgrade to the chat/video software going out next week.

I forgot to mention that the lockups happen when changing the size of the member webcam windows. Since they now are larger, I usually need to reduce the size by dragging the corner.

The message center is what it is. I'm glad that you all are working on making it faster and more functional.

I also preferred have more of an email format as opposed to a more chat looking message format to the message center. There are times I might want to keep a one particular email from someone but not the 4 they sent before or after that one.

I also miss the feature where were have messages from people who didn't match our cupid profiles.

Andrew replies on 5/9/2014 7:27 am:
Individual messages can be deleted (tho it takes some time to click each one to delete). You can show only "Important" messages.

there is one thing i like about the message center that it shows if there was any past conversation with that person..i get so many emails its nice that the emails will show if the person and i may have emailed in the past. i cant even remember the several hundred i actually met over the years...let alone anyone that may have emailed and there was no meet

je ne regrette rien

Yes, trying to make it easier to mark "favorite" members. Hmmm... perhaps could make it easier to add someone to your hotlist and reuse the hotlist category.

Andrew, thanks for the reply. As for the 'subject line' and the first lines being seen as it is now, the subject line is way easier to see is all. Again, this is more of a chat system than an email system. I would be furious of Yh or Gml or any of the other actual Email systems went to this. Having the folders to save things and not have time dates or having to keep clicking on things to get to what you want is just time wasting to many of us. You can peruse over subject lines WAY quicker than trying to go down and read them in the chat system the way it is set up right now.

As for the 'important' message filter idea, I get it, but again it was easier to just have your emails match your cupid settings if one chose that OPTION. (NOTE: option means it is NOT mandatory. It is something you can turn on or off if you wish to use it or not. ) If a person, say a woman, was looking for women only and that was her cupid settings then a man could not even be able to email her! That definitely cut down on flotsam in our inbox as well as it saved the person sending it the rejection or frustration of not getting a reply. I know there is nothing you can really do about people reading or not reading profiles, but seriously so many think after the horrible ad campaigns of recent that this is just a whorehouse warehouse and ALL women do EVERYONE no matter what that they don't read anything and send "this is a sex site b*tch" out when in fact it is an Adult SOCIAL Network..not a sluts - r - us drive through. You see pages of men in the blogs complaining of no answers and think we are all fakes as well as their profiles slamming "we know what we are all here for don't play games" stuff. Not everyone IS here to have sex and you and I as well as many others do know that. Having the ability to have the emails and cupid settings match IF A PERSON CHOSE TO is a nice thing. I am sure someone is going to say they don't like the idea. That is okay too!! Make the OPTION available and if one doesn't want to use it then they can have all emails come in regardless of who sends it, but having options for others to narrow down things so they get closer to what they are looking for and not just a wide field of anyone and everyone regardless of age, race, status, etc... just helps their stay here more enjoyable.

I agree totally!!! The click click click is way more cumbersome. That has been my point in much of this. These 'labels' instead of 'folders' and such, is just not the same. Even if you save a message to a 'label' it will suffer the same as before with deletions due to the length of the messages on it as when a new one came in it will go to that message no matter what 'label' you put it under.

No, not really well. I see the same complaints as well. It seriously did help with the emails and the fact that as I said so many people do not read profiles. You have people that play the numbers game and just send out 100's of emails to as many women as they can waiting for one to respond. Personally, I wouldn't want someone that was that desperate for sex that they contacted anyone and everyone, but worse yet is that as a female we can get in excess of seriously 100-150 emails A DAY!! The current chat system as opposed to an actual Email system really doesn't help that at all. You have to constantly hit the 'more' button as you only see 10 messages at a time. Follow that with again, having no subject line you have to stop and try to read everything whether they were a match or not. The old message center you could easily see so many things that one would know to delete or not if they didn't match what they were looking for.

I know there will be those that complain about this, but you know I don't want to hire a secretary to go through my messages in a day just to find that out of 100 messages only 5-10 were actually what I wanted, nor does anyone else. Responding to all of them even though your profile may say 'no married men' and you have 32 married men on there... come on. Same with if someone is 58 and they are not interested in someone 22 or vice versa. The cupid setting option for emails helped TONS as it didn't let those even be sent and the person didn't get all ticked off because he didn't get a reply. He couldn't SEND a message so therefore was not rejected. This is about what each person wants. I am not here to satisfy someone else's anything, I want ME to be happy. So if I don't want a 22 year old I shouldn't be told to give him a chance and all. Again, this is an OPTION, not mandatory. One chooses to use it or not so if you want all the messages do not turn it on. I know many of us would love that option turned back on.

If you turn off your profile to turn off your emails you also turn off all of your blogs and everything else. There is no option to just turn off your emails if one wants to take a break.

I Just want the old message center back...lol sorry. You could have all the messages saved if you hit reply and didn't erase anything. If you replied and didn't want the prior messages or a prior message you just highlighted and deleted it. It was far more simple with the fonts/colors/sizes and all in typing, subject lines were there, it was just more user friendly with less clicks and all.

JAFO222 Trust me.. I HEAR YOU!! I do totally understand the frustrations of the men, but honestly, most of the problems are caused by the men... not all, but MANY. If they read the profiles they would see which woman wanted a 22 year old and which did not. When one is plagued with nothing but unwanted emails one gets tired of it and does leave. I often say to the people that say age is just a number that it may be for them, but not for others. Would that same 22 year old really want a 92 year old?? Possibly, but probably not. Yes, it is a business and the site is here to make a profit, but not at my expense or anyone else's is all I am saying. One person's preference should not override another's i.e. I see tons of men complaining they get emails from gay men and they are not gay. Look at it this way instead of from the women's view. I see tons of men with "NOT GAY" and "WOMEN ONLY" in their profiles and b*tches about gay men contacting them and they are repulsed. Okay, if they could use the cupid settings and have it so that the men couldn't even email them at all they would be happier!!! I can guarantee you that although there may be a few that would try out gay male sex, there is going to be a significant number that will NEVER try it out. So to say they should just suffer and continue to get those unwanted gay emails because after all those gay men PAID for a membership so therefore those wants are more important.. poppycock is all I have to say. NO ONE.. male OR female should have to 'suffer' through anything they don't want. It causes people to leave. Leaving the door open for that makes people bitter, short, not want to answer emails at all, and totally turned off by the site itself. Then no one gets anything, the site included. So the same 22 year old that wants a chance at a woman that is 58, regardless of what her profile says is no different than a straight man having to tolerate the gay emails when he doesn't want them. It sets them up for rejection then causes the sender to become bitter when they don't get what they thought they were promised i.e. sex in 24 hours. Some people just seriously know what they want and don't want and the OPTION (again, not mandatory it is something you can toggle on and/or off if you wanted) to have emails match cupid settings WOULD benefit those looking. It would cut down the frustrations of both sides, senders and receivers by cutting down the unwanted clutter that one knows they don't want and stopping a person from being rejected when they should have realized they would be rejected from the start, and more people are happier with less to complain about. I know for sure I do not want a married man.. no if's, and's, or but's... it isn't going to change AT ALL. So telling a married man to go ahead and contact me anyway I 'might' change my mind is only going to get him turned down no matter what. Same with those straight men.. no gay no matter what. If someone doesn't mind it.. .open it up and get all the emails from everyone.

I agree.. I DO NOT cherish Andrew's job at this point. He IS doing a fabulous job of reaching out and trying.

I am not able to get hook up when I go to South Central Alaska, Juneau, or here in Ketchikan... I had tried everything in order to get what I want to view that is on line... I should not have to go there every Men in order find the ones I keep in contact with... I don't want to view men ONLY has photos.. Some of my friends DO NOT PHOTOS on their profile....

You actually DO have a message. The freaking awful new message center is NOT loading into the "All messages" category. So use the drop down and make sure it says "All Messages" and/or check for where the number 1 or whatever number of emails you have are. If you made a folder that says "Friends" and it is there you have to actually click on THAT folder to find it.

This is all again reasons I HATE the new message center. It is not user friendly, it is in fact a pain in the butt.

Your recent site improvements are laudable and do help on the regular desktop or laptop access to your site. I think you're probably all ready ahead of me on this, but I think a few more mobile or smartphone enhancements are needed to make this THE top notch site for the future.

I have just a couple of suggestions for your mobile Android app.
1) Add a link for viewing real-time video of the members broadcasting. You have a link on your full website, but no direct link for your mobile app. There are are growing number of members who do not have access to either a laptop or desktop pc, and only interact with the web through their smartphone.

2) Do the same for mobile for your Instant Messaging protocols, and update this for easier access and complete video sharing through your smartphone (Android) and iPhone apps. This would greatly increase people wanting to stay with your service over the long haul.

These suggestions are coming from someone who has been with your service off and (mostly) on since the middle of the year 2000, going on 15 years now. I've seen the bad, the good, and the ugly along the way, and I humbly make these suggestions from a long time users standpoint.

Take care and peace and prosperity to you.

Overall the message center works, but, overall notifications and updates don't show up unless you refresh your browser. This makes it difficult to respond in a timely manner to anyone sending you emails or flirts. If that issue could be resolved then I would spend more time online instead of a quick check and then logging out. Having to keep checking to see who's sent me something isn't going to make me hang out and flirt.

I have tired contacting customer services and still have yet to get any answers. So here it goes. Don't know if this fully relates to the messages center changes and updates but I think this is a BIG PROBLEM[/SIZE].

The Instant Messenger App has changed what it shows you on the Who's Online Feature . Some time Last Week it changes, and no matter how you change your setting nothing works to bring back the full list.

Everyone I spoken too is annoyed with this change I have even talked to people I know through other means when both of us are on the Instant messenger but still cant see each other.

This might be a change where you no longer letting men see other men unless they have it marked in their profile that they are interested in men. But a lot of men don't share that info with everyone and still want to be seen by other men, and see other men. Though there are guys who are gay or bi in the profile who I cant see on the instant messenger app when I can see they are online and on it due to their profile so what ever new Filter you added is not working right anyways,

Please, please, please, please change things back to the way they were just barely over a week ago before what ever it is that you all did. Last time the Instant Messenger App did this sort of thing there was a major decline in users, even the regular web page usages dropped of dramatically and it took way to long to gain back. Even I stopped using the site as much and would HATE for this to happen again.

A question about Gold Membership. I have been a gold member since I joined this site. I am a Member Since: 12/29/1997. Why does it cost me $ 20.95 a month to renew my Gold and a female with under one years membership and participation is offered Gold Membership for $9.95? Is there nothing about membership loyalty, or is it only gender oriented? I ask in this forum, since your telephone customer service team has no answer.

Here is some simple math for you, AdultFriendFinder one year / 12 month membership $180.00. Lifetime membership on another Swing LifeStyle site $169.00.
Free members have limited photo viewing and e-mail privileges. They are allowed in chat rooms on the Instant messenger and webcam chats.
Anyone can set-up dates or parties on the local calendar feature and the e-mail works.

We'll give you two guess where we spend our $$$.

I'm sure you wont, so I'm thinking about NOT upgrading my membership BUT retiring from the site for ever.

Please explain to me why someone should purchase a gold membership, when the only people that can read a message that you send them, is other gold members.

All you're doing with your new rules concerning memberships, is a big money grab.

Good luck on that.

Hi Andrew,

The message categories are still extremely slow, and for most of us, not really useful. How hard is it to create a drop-down list box to select something and then it just shows up?!?!

And someone went and messed up the word wrap when viewing messages. How did that happen??
