Poetic Self-Portrait

Do You Love?

Do you love?
Your clear eyes splinter
with tears
No. You don’t cry.
But, tears trickle down…..
Inside.
Inside those secrets you keep subdued~
behind a black veil.
Are you angry?
At God? The world? Me?
(I’m pissed off, too.)
In a different kind of recklessness.

Jack down tequila~salt around the smooth rim~
Salt around smooth, pink lips that used to
smile freely.

Do you love?
I would give you the flowers of a new creation~
Yellow, blooming and bright;
But none bloom here in this
universe of sand.
I can hear your mind.
You don’t have to speak a word
or utter a dream.
You’re screaming!
It shatters a comfortable reality.
Shards scatter
in chaotic profusion.

All right. Give up. Don’t give in.
There’s a difference.
Give some of yourself
to those who never will be able to appreciate
your intricacy.

Keep the most ominous pieces of that puzzle
for yourself.
Hoard those emotions;
like an old farmer
covets his railroad watch
keeping it dangling from a thin
chain in his plow jeans.
(I understand)
Do you love?

Just want to add a little info regarding this poem. I wrote this at the tender age of 18. When I read it now...I'm awestruck at how accurately it describes "me!". Two reasons.....I didn't realize that I was this person back then, I do know that I am now, and I certainly didn't realize I knew myself THAT well back then. Weird that reading it now I see parts of it that I relate to experiences of only within the last 10 years....I try to recall what provoked these images 20 years ago.....must be something deep inside me that will never change.
