"Mommy, My Five Hurts"

(Does it mean I’ve made it to the big time if I have banned text….Anyway…I’ll try posting the roundabout way. Wonder which text would be banned….)

"Mommy, My Five Hurts"

"What's that, baby?" My four year old was standing before me, a pout so pitiful it nearly broke my heart. Her bottom lip trembled as she spoke again. "My five hurts." I wasn't sure I was hearing her correctly. "Your what hurts sweetie?" Clearly losing patience with me, she repeated it again. "My FIVE!", she held up her hand and extended 1 finger at a time while continuing with, "you know, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!" Ahhhh.....her thumb hurt! At that moment, I never wanted her to know that her five was called a thumb. Her five was fine after a kiss and she did eventually learn it was a thumb. She grew up.

That same four year old is now a young woman getting married in 3 days. The same four year old I spent the entire day yesterday at the county jailhouse for. I got the call from her fiance' around midnite on the 4th....by 8 am I was sitting at the bail bondsman tryng to figure out how all this works....and wondering if my baby girl was ok. I wanted to hold her in my arms and tell her everything's gonna be ok. I sat hoping she knew in her heart that I wasn't mad or even disappointed (that's the worst). I wanted to protect her from all that she has endured over the past several hours.

She made a mistake. She is learning a hard lesson. One that I never wanted her to have to learn. I wanted to take her home and put it behind us....continue with the final wedding arrangements. I wanted to kiss it and make it all better. Just like I did with her five.
They never stop breaking our hearts

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I do commend you for being supportive and not judgemental. As you wrote in your post, "I wanted to kiss it and make it all better. Just like I did with her five" - sometimes that's all you can do. I hope the wedding is beautiful.

They grow up in the wink of an eye it seems at times. Your story was wonderfully written. Thank you for sharing it.

Your child is still learning her lessons (like the rest of us). Hopefully she will apply her knowledge and avoid further legal trouble.

I also hope that the wedding went off without a hitch. Um, I mean I hope the wedding went well.

Thanks guys! I'm sure the wedding, in and of itself, will be another post. I can already tell there will be humor involved.
