Too Scared to Kiss?

From ‘The Times’, November 3rd 2005

What can be more expressive of passion and romance than a kiss? However, you might be interested to know that about 350 species of micro-organisms live in the healthiest of mouths. A study by the University of Southern California shows that on average there will be an exchange of 278 colonies of microbes with the recipient of your saliva.

The following diseases may be passed on as in deep passion your tongues play around each other:

Glandular Fever - the Epstein-Barr virus can be passed on by a passionate kiss.

Meningitis - the meningococcal bacteria live harmlessly in the noses and throats of 10 percent of people. A study in the British Medical Journal showed that kissers are 10.4 percent more likely to contract the disease.

Flu and Colds - both can be passed on by kissing.

Cold Sores - one kiss with a person infected by the herpes virus is enough to allow the virus access to your own facial nerve cells, to lie dormant until you are stressed, tired or generally below the weather, when mouth ulcers and cold sores can erupt.

Hepatitis C - there is a risk, according to researchers at the University of Washington, that this potentially fatal virus can be passed on by kissing. Traces of the virus have been found in saliva.

So next time grandma puckers her lips, reach for the dental dam. You just can’t be too careful, can you!

Bella, I'm soooooo sorry. I'm on such a guilt trip over this post.

But somehow I don't think the epidemic of oral hypochondria I've unwittingly started will last!!!

Angel, your words make me tingle, just think what your kiss would do. It would take more than a few single-celled critters to stop our lips meeting and our tongues playing, our bodies in sweet, warm embrace. I would abandon all thought of risk and live the moment at the edge. warm xx

Be still my beating heart,
as it has become all aflutter.
Kiss me once, kiss me twice,
then tell me you want another.

Beautiful, warm. The ending is deelish! Ooo la la!

Since you have asked, sensuelle, ma belle:

Our lips touch
With the lightness
Of feather
And nerves sing
The body electric.

Our lips press
Like the sinking
Of cushion
In cushion,
With the sweet joy of flesh.

Our mouths part
As we welcome
Each other
To enter
The ingress to our souls.

Our tongues play
Around each other
None but
Arouse me my darling.

I'd risk all of the above for a nice sensuous opportunity to wrap my arms around you and feel your kiss all the way to my toes.

Maybe that makes me the type to live a little dangerously... but I have to get my adreneline rushes where I can!

Just let me know when you're ready to hang glide across this little lake we call the Atlantic for a shot at swapping germs with me and I amm for it sweetheart!

Geez. Who would've thought a kiss could be so "deadly".
I can still blow you kisses from across the pond. {=}

I really like the picture with this post.

So, since we're on the subject of kissing, inquiring minds want to know: Can you describe your kiss?

caressmewell, I guess humans and bugs have coexisted for millenia, and we kissed with sweet abandon in our ignorance. Damn these scientists with their fancy microscopes, scaring us and spoiling the fun. warm xx

LadyF, Jeez! If we took all this bug stuff seriously we'd hide away in self-contained sterile bubbles and fantasise about kissing.

Thanks about the pic - Rodin did so many 'the kiss' statues. They're all slightly different, and all so sensuously wonderful.

The way I look at it, Huntress, is you've got to build up immunity somehow! warm xx

I think most people will take their chances with kissing as long as there are no obvious things like cold sores there. Love the pic with the post.
