The Falling Man

like a butterfly’s wing furling
his canopy collapsed
from a full blooming flower
to limp, wilting shard
just like that

a public spectacle
a private horror
happening too quickly
for horror to strike
like it does in the movies

unless of course you’re watching
wiley coyote or daffy
there is a black comedic
quality in disaster
as he plunges downwards

and
strikes
the
ground

the helicopter comes
and removes him
to somewhere safe
stark and clinical
if he survives

and we talk
amongst ourselves
about such an easy mistake
and how it could have been me
about how we will still

step
……into
…………the
……………..void

for such is life…..

Thank you Marina for your caring and concern. I learned that lesson the hard way. I ignored my inner voice fifteen months ago when flying in the Welsh borders and still shudder at the memory.

I'm so glad you trusted your inner voice ... gut instincts ... intuition ... whatever you want to call it ... *hugs*

I would imagine that air ambulances probably spend as much time rescuing foolish risk-takers as they do those who have got into difficulties through no fault of their own

..thats a bit scary....dont frighten me like that..
Sorry, heavenly, I didn't mean to ..... honest. I went with a handful of other flyers and went to the bowl at Beachy Head and we had a nice afternoon in the sea breeze, even if the flying was unspectacular.

Awww that's so sweet of you Goddess. Everyone I know who free-flies has had their moment or two, and seen such things. But we are all drawn back into the sky.

"He who has tasted flight will walk the earth with his eyes forever turned skywards, for there he has been and there he longs to return."

Leonardo da Vinci

Thank you for your concern ....

I'm sorry it's such a bleak post, but the first flying site I went to yesterday was so crowded, with so many people who hadn't flown through the winter and conditions that got no one high in the sky or far from the hill that it just looked so wrong and my inner voice said don't fly there. There were two accidents in the space of three hours and the sight of the air ambulance in such circumstances is a sobering one. So I went with a handful of other flyers to another site on the coast and flew there. Uncrowded, friendly and a lot safer.
