Fiddler On The Roof

No, not that kind of fiddler. The kind that fiddles with things. You know, no real clue but has to give it a go anyway.

So the ol' tin roof is leaking ... again. I think I've identified the spot from the inside. So I head out and pick up some heavy duty fibrous roof patch resin stuffus on my way home from work. And I crawl up there and ... damn.

Not as in damn it's a big-arsed hole. No. Damn as in how many bloody people have tried to fix this leak before me?!?!?! It's really that bad.

The first patch looked to be cauk. That, in turn, looked to be patched over with strips of aluminum. And that in turn was patched with something kind of like cauk and kind of like the heavy duty crap I've been using. That in turn was painted over with something thicker than normal paint. And that was all painted over with regular paint. Talk about a mess. And it was all done badly.

Now, I'm certainly no expert. I'm just a fiddler. But even I could see that continuing to slop new layers of crap over the old every time it started leaking again wasn't going to fix the problem that the roof in that section was just badly built in the first place and then badly patched the first time. Each of the cracks below are just widening and pieces breaking away, taking the newer patches with.

So I chisselled away at it until I got it back to the bare roof. And then I cleaned it off, and patched it up good and solid. Even if the patch doesn't hold any longer (though I'm sure it will) it at least looks ten times better. And I may even put a second coat on it tomorrow just to make sure.

And then after the roof was done, I went out into the lawn to pick up the broken pieces of glass from my shattered windows, thanks to my little fire a while back. I'm going to have to mow the lawn sooner or later, and while I may have missed a shard here or there, at least now I'm a lot less likely candidate for the surprise Thousand Flying Razor attack.

Geeze I'm wiped now. Time for some of that bad pizza and then bed.

vrec do you have a metal roof? If you do patch all the bad places with black jack roof tar. Make sure all nails are pounded in tight. Then get the really think roof fiber paint. You can broom it on good and thick if you have the right shaped roof. Then when you are done come and paint my front metal roof. LOL the other is shingles.
Good luck

Yeah, most of my roof is tin. (There's one extension that isn't even shingles, just tar paper or something.) But yeah, that's pretty much what I did. Though I didn't need to cover such a large area that I needed a broom, thank goodness. I've got to paint my roof one of these days too. But it's dangerous because the bright sparks who painted it last covered the steepest parts in this really slippery paint, making it very hazardous to walk on those places. So I'll need to find paint with a better traction than that when I do it, and do it in stages so that I can walk on the places I've painted to get to the next stages. Otherwise I'll fall on my ass.
