High Velocity Chickens

Have you ever heard the story of NASA's chicken gun?
Its another excellent use of taxpayer money; this one involves NASA and French Engineers:

Basically, NASA was worried about the shuttle hitting birds on the way up, so they created a gun to fire store bought chickens at the shuttle. The idea was that if the windshield and such could hold up against a high velocity chicken, then a flock of crows, bald eagles, etc. would be butter.

When testing the TGV, France's high speed train, Alstom engineers heard about NASA's incredible chicken gun, and they thought, "Hey, what a great idea! we could use this to see if our train can handle French Hens, (and the other sundry birds found in the French countryside) If they try to fly to the other side of the tracks"

So, they made a deal with NASA, and had the gun shipped to France. They set everything up, aimed the gun at the windshield of the train, put in a chicken, and...

FIRED!

now, as an aside, those French engineers were pretty confindent that their windshields were up to par. After all, they use the same engineering equations we do in America.... SO, they had their wine and cheese ready to celebrate a successful chicken splat on the windshield.

Imagine, then, how surprised they were to find that the high velocity chicken not only shattered the windshield, but continued through the cabin and through the cabin wall into the next compartment.

Aghast, they supposed there must have been something wrong with that particular windshield, so after a bit of work, they tried this again on another train. Again, shattered windshield, but this time the chicken was found stuck part way through the cabin rear wall.

Completely flustered, the French engineers called the NASA engineers who had so competently created the chicken gun. After some correspondence, they finally realized why their high velocity chickens were totaling their amazing high speed trains...

The French had neglected to thaw their chickens.
