North of the Road... (Something Different)

Dusty, hot and scavengers in the sky. That is all I see before me in this godforsaken country. I pull up on the reigns. My water almost gone, my horse tired from the ride but we are almost there. Beside me are my friends, my men. They are the men of Rolling Rock. All 14 are proud and strong men. None count more than 26 summers to their name. Weathered by the elements, hats pulled low they gaze across this barren field to the next hill, where beyond is a reprieve, a chance to rest, play, lose a little money and see a woman. We lost two of these proud men to warring Comanche’s. One we lost to 40,000 stampeding feet during a thunderstorm two weeks ago. But my remaining 14 men, tried and true, are here beside me. Always here beside me. My word is their law. They know its edicts and decrees. Not out of fear but out of respect. These are hard men, my friends. Men who love hard, play hard and work hard. These are men come with me up Texas way. Greater men and truer fighters I couldn’t ask for.

Today we ride and Tonight we dance.

Riding into this town, we ride 5 abreast. Imposing sights. Big men in a big land. The earth and all its elements have hardened these, my friends, and me with em. People shy away. My boys are allowed to do what they will south of the street, but they ain’t allowed to go north of the street. Thinking about it only aggravates me more. Until I see her. Long blonde hair, fair skin the sun ain’t seen in years and the umbrella to prove it. She stands there outside the store nearer the north side than the south and damn near impossible to touch.

Weathered but not beaten, unshaven, dusty and hot, I tip my hat to her out of respect but she has captured my imagination these last 3 trips into this place. Tonight is the night. I plan to ride the line straight past the street and into the north side to court her. Damned if I won’t. My boys, knowing the rules as well as I do, will still go with me. We truly don’t want trouble, just trust enough to carry this woman away to a place of prominence in Texas. We aim to get it, even if we have to take it from these soft local men.

She crosses the street. Umbrella twirling and chest heaving as she crosses before my men. She knows I look. She catches my embarrassment at being caught but walks straight across the street, proud and bold as you please. None of my men speaks, none snicker. These men of Rolling Rock know my heart and know that she will soon be the mistress of our ranch. They await my word.

As she crosses before me I say one word, “Ma’am.”

“Sir,” she says, quietly and proudly up at me. Damn if she ain’t the best sight this side of the stars.

“Ma’am, “ I try again, “I aim to head north this evening, to call at your home.” Will you allow it?”

“Sir, you know the rules, no Texas boys are allowed north of the street.”

“That law was made for drinkers and troublemakers Ma’am. Not for those seeking matters of the heart. I aim to come tonight regardless of the rules and your permission might make it easier on us in the long run.”

“Well then Sir,” she said with strength and resolve, umbrella resting on her shoulders, “Come then if you will, but do Sir ensure yourself of a bath first.” Eyes sparkleing she turned and finished her walk across the street, skirts swaying and taking my heart right along with that umbrella she carried.

“You heard the fine lady, fellas, “I shouted at my boys. “To the hotel for it’s bath time. Tonight we ride north!”

If ya hurry you can HEAD HER OFF AT THE PASS.

If you hate that cliche, please refrain from shooting at my feet. I only have a few toes left!

Ya know, I can definately see Miss Bunny as a can-can girl... Hmm, I'm sure I've got something for her to wear in my costume trunk (I love keeping costumes from shows I worked on ). And I can completly believe you would make an awesome cow-hand. Better than that guy in Open Range. Oh, sorry Mr. Costner, but it's true.

Many kisses, and thanks for the b-day wishes. I'm officially twenty... nevermind. Don't wanna offend anyone with how young I am.
