North of the Road Part 4

Part I
Part II
Part III

We rode down that road for what seemed like miles. Each step the horse took forward seemed to bring me farther from my destination. The small yards that surrounded this road were filled with occupants, too struck dumb at what they had just witnessed to resist. Sheer awesome power had over run them, driven them back. Where guns and flame would call up resistance, my bloodied knuckles had forced them to cower. I was not a weapon but a tool. They had just witnessed this first hand.

We were unopposed riding down the street to the house on the hill where the Mayor and his niece lived. My small army, with Five and I in the lead was an imposing sight to anyone willing to see. The light in the front room shone brighter as we closed the distance.

Coming to the front gate, I turned to Five and without a word, handed him the reigns of my horse.

“Be back in a minute,” I told him.

“Yup,” was the reply I received.

Gentle thunder is the only way I know to describe the blood rushing my ears. The gentle curves and swells of her body imploded against the back of my eyes. Her eyes, incredible in their multifaceted colors, shown through in my memory as a gorgeous Texas sunrise does near every day. I made that last walk. 30 feet in all to the front door. Hat donned, coat pulled tight, I knocked upon the door.

An eternity seemed to come and go as I awaited the opening of that door. Nothing. No sign of movement through the windows either. I knocked again, this time allowing a little impatience to show through. Footsteps sounded inside and then the door was thrown open before me. The mayor, dressed in a fine grey suit not found around this area stood there, red in the face and unbelief in his features.

Continued inside as first comment

Awwww, why the sudden change? I really wanted the happy ending. However, this does mean more story to read... I'm so conflicted.
