Dark Jazz.... Part 2

I stand silent and still before the mirror, catching my racing heart before it beats out of control. On the outside, I appear cool and calm but on the inside, my mind and heart race to their own beat. Whatever my personal concerns however, there is still a show to do tonight. I reach out and in one swift movement grab the derby hat from off the Styrofoam head and flick the edge. Caught in the shadows of the room, deeper shadow reflects across my chest and face as I place the derby on my head with practiced ease. My face, hidden now in shadow in the mirror, is only slightly more visible than the rest of me. Now outlined in the dark, I look the part of the shadow I will walk on stage. The visage of something untouchable. Untouchable that is, until tonight.

I turn and leave the dressing room, moving through the dimly lit hallways in the direction of backstage. I casually move from the dimly lit corridors to the half light that pronounces my arrival back stage. People walk by me, many nodding, some offering whispered greetings and all ignored. I walk directly over to the stage manager who is currently gripping at someone about something they have not done.

“Have they arrived?” My question comes across anxious.

He stops in the midst of his complaining and offers a curt “yes” then turns back to his complaining. Oddly I am satisfied. I know now that the evening has been set in motion, there shall be no backing out and I will move forward with nary a concern. I had kept up with their activities all day and I knew this was to be a night to remember.

Steve had picked her up at exactly one o’clock. According to Steve there had been no indecision, no concern showing in her when she left the front door of Vincent’s and was ushered into the black limo. As the door was opened by the driver and she entered the car Steve had stated plainly to her.

“Tonight is your night. Everything, every activity that we do today, is for you and you alone. The man that sent me is my best friend. I know he wishes it was he that was here instead of I. Unfortunately, his schedule did not allow it. I will be your friend instead on this trip.”

This is pure torture to me! I have been known on many occassions to stay up all night reading until I find out what happens. I want to know what happens and you are forcing me to wait! Argh! Evil man!

I like how you tell a story. And I'm a voracious reader. I hate reading stories that don't have a satisfying ending. You leave yours open for more, so I demand more.
