No More Bush

re: the following article, what are your thoughts? bono has always ben thought of as a great humanitarian. why would he refuse to be associated with any fund raising efforts here in the US? could it be his opposition to the bush administration? hmmmmmmmmm

Bono Dissociates Himself From Fundraising By FOSTER KLUG, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 30 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - U2's Bono says he is not involved in efforts by U.S. lawmakers to use his band's concerts to raise campaign money.

Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and other politicians have scheduled fundraising events in private suites during shows for U2's North American Vertigo tour, which runs through the end of December.

Jamie Drummond, executive director of DATA, an Africa advocacy group that Bono helped found, said in a message posted on the band's Web site: "Neither DATA nor Bono are involved in these (fundraisers), and they cannot be controlled. The U2 concerts are categorically not fundraisers for any politician; they are rock concerts for U2 fans."

Another DATA spokesman said Bono was speaking for himself and not for the rest of the Irish rock band.

Bono is a dedicated lobbyist for the world's poor and AIDS-stricken.

Santorum's press secretary, Robert Traynham, said Thursday that the decision by the Senate's third-ranking Republican to hold a fundraiser during Sunday's Philadelphia show is based on his "deep respect and admiration for Bono and their work together over the last few years to fight the global spread of HIV-AIDS."

Traynham said Santorum's office has not spoken with Bono about his position, but it is routine for elected officials to host such fundraisers at sporting and cultural events.

The fundraiser will go ahead as planned, Traynham said.

Clinton, the former first lady, who represents New York, expects 18 supporters willing to pay $2,500 each to benefit Democrats, to join her at a U2 concert at the MCI Center in Washington.

Messages left Thursday with Clinton's office were not immediately returned.

I can attempt entering Bono's mind, who has been a musician always wary about political exploitation of U2's work since the times of Sunday Bloody Sunday. So, if U2 were not consulted I guess theirs is just a natural reaction. Probably they would have issued a similar press release even if there was a democratic administration running the country. Moreover, if they believe that their songs are distilled out of their feelings, it is natural to ask that no one exloiting your feelings to run a political campaign. Because it is inevitable: almost all of politicians are not neutral institutional figures (like the president in Italy for instance, who doesn't belong to any party), and whatever fundraising they might put up it is an indirect campaign. Perhaps it is just as the press release told: "The U2 concerts are categorically not fundraisers for any politician: they are rock concerts".

However, I could never associate myself to a slogan like "No more bush"!

Yes, I noticed the capital "B"... oh... you meant the political man?

good point, priapeo. i, however, am miss conspiracy theory. i know that the rest of the free world is completely opposed to our president's warring/feuding/dueling nature, but when there is a disaster anywhere else in the world, americans are always the first to jump in and assist in getting them back on their feet. either this has not been widely publicized (which is entirely possible) or it simply has not happened.

AND, mio amico, i did mean the president. you can have all the bush you like...not that i have any (LO.

I contest your statement: I can't have all the Bush that I like.

Oh, btw... i find it so sexy when a foreign lady writes Italian. You know some, isn't it? Pls, feel free to use it whenever you can!
