Sunday is for...

When i was a kid my uncle (that i lived with) worked during the week and on the weekends he was all about home improvement, bbq's and classic rock. Saturday was usually the cleaning day. He would turn the stereo on and get down and dirty scrubing and polishing. Sunday was my favorite though, by the time i would wake up my uncle was already in the kitchen making a breakfast that would have fed the whole block. He would do pancakes, eggs, bacon, and two kinds of potatoes, one spicy and one not. Coffee and juice. He would dance around like Bugs Bunny and play air guitar to the classic rock booming from the stereo. Then about three hours later just as we would finish cleaning that mess, the family would show up, the beer would pile up in the fridge and begin to dissapear just as quick. My aunts gathered in the kitchen boiling potatoes, choping onion, and tomatos, and blending spices into the ground beef for hamburgers, all of the vegetables and side dishes would be prepared and ready by the time the meat hit the grill. Then it would be beer run, somtimes I would go too and pick a movie for us kids to watch. When we return everyone is laughing and the stereo is still booming. The boys are climbing the trees in the front yard, my sister is playing with the new baby cousin, and I stop to look. I see my fathers brother my uncle, and all the happiness, I would sit and idolize him for all that was funny and loving about him. Soon though all of them quit drinking together, and all of the fun ran out, they didn't socialize like friends. They all began fighting and divorcing each other. Thats when my sister and I were sent away again. I will always remember the weekends, I think of him today and wonder if his Sundays are anything like they used to be. With all the love and the wonderful smells in the air. That's what Sundays are for...
