"Fuck" Definition

Fuck, what a good Anglo-Saxon cuss word that is being overused in our society today. But, the story behind how the word came about is fascinating.

For what I've been told, and the little research I've been able to do, the fuck is one of the first American contributions to the English language. Back in the original Puritan colony of Massachusetts, when you were found guilty of a crime, a possible sentence was to spend a period of time in the stocks of the public square (hands and neck between two pieces of wood on a post). This made the criminal subject to public ridicule, and rotten vegetables or worse thrown at him.

So the good townspeople would know what the criminal was guilty of, a sign naming the crime was posted above or around the stock. Apparently, one crime was entitled "free, unlicensed carnal knowledge". As the sign did not have enough room to put this phrase on it, the abbreviation F.U.C.K. was used, and thus fuck came into our language.

Now then, this story makes me wonder the following: if a guy happened to use a prostitute, if such a lady existed back then, would he be guilty of the same crime? I think maybe not, as he paid for it, thus it wasn't free. However, I'm sure that the Puritans had another law that he would be breaking. Also, a married couple having intercourse together cannot be guilty of this, because they afterall have a marriage licence.

Hope this made you smile, and that you have a good day. May all of us on this site find someone that we can fuck and share a great passion with.

It is a nice story, but that's all it is. The Germanic ancestor of this word came to Britain along with the Anglo-Saxons (we're talking like sixth century A.D. here). But you don't have to believe me; check out the etymology in the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language.

(Another fanciful story I was encountered portrayed it again as an acronym, this one meaning lawful sex: Fornication Under Consent of King.)

Connor, ya beat me to it! Drat!

Been a while since they last let me out into polite society. Resurfacing, catching a breath, & catching up.

And while I got my Broad-Brimmed Pimping Hat on, could I cajole all of y'all to Comment on, Alone In A Cloud? It's probably the best thing that I've written!

Thanks for the correction - I appreciate it. However, leads to the next question, what did the Germanic ancestor of fuck mean originally? However, I do stand by my statement that fuck is overused in our society today.
