Marketing cell phones to children!

I was just reading the newspaper and stumbled upon an article discussing cell phones and children. It appears that the teenage market for cell phones is a thing of the past. Companies are now marketing phones for kids under the age of 12... all the way down to kindergarden!

This is just insane. For one, I don't even have a fucking cell phone. Granted, that is because finances do not allow for that right now. But still - a 5 year old?? That is kindergarden age! Next time you go to a store and see school supplies, check out the backpacks. They are coming equipped with *gasp* cell phone holders. Can you believe that shit??

Apparently, these phones are "child-proof" - they do not have regular number pads. They have pictures on the phone and a child would maybe push a picture of a house to call home. It's like a cell phone with training wheels.

I understand the thought behind teenagers and cell phones. But, one has to wonder what a child under the age of 12 would need with a phone. How often should a child under 12 be without their parents? Especially a kindergarden aged child. This just boggles my mind. I swear companies will market to anyone.
