Then there are the days that inspire me to be thinking beyond me. Those are my truly happiest days and great contentment just washes over me. Watching them perform, their arms and hands gesturing along with the songs, it all clutches at my heart and I know why I do what I do, participating in the arguments over whose turn it is, or warn Mr. So and so that he must not step on his friend lying on the floor, even if neither of them are feeling friendly toward each other.

I love seeing the earnest decisiveness on their faces, sure that they couldn’t possibly be wrong ‒ that according to their point of view, they are right! And there isn’t time to worry about my personal feelings, no time for wallowing in self-pity. There is only time to reach out, to hug, to laugh, and to look in their eyes. Only time to let them know that someone likes them even when they aren’t particularly likeable or loveable. There is only time to KNOW I was right, that the more difficult they are at the beginning, the more love they have to give, the more loyalty they have from being given love.

And so I watch out for them, as they barrel across the play yard to demand their hugs, their moment of being special, and in return I am given the world.

And lest I sound disgustingly sappy…yes, they are monsters sometimes. My monsters, thank you very much!
